Lovely Smiles

by Yohaho

The people, abosulte the people. My trip gave me lot of chances to interact with the people. They are curious about other culture and are open to talk to anyone. One gentlement I met who travel frequently between the pacific islands told me Fijian are the most friendly among the pacific islanders. There great hospitality definitely made my trip a memorable one.

Visit a Fijian village. I happened to join a tour in Suva. We were taken to the upper stream of Navua River by motor boat. Then we visited a small Fijian village. There was a small church in the village with no electricity. The tour guide told us Christianity is the major religion in Fiji. The village people also sang us a song and performed their traditional Fijian dance to welcome our visit. The tour was a good deal as I took the bus to Navua to meet other tour memebers so they gave me a big discount. The people, absolutely the people. When you are strolling on the street, eating in the restaurant or even swimming in the river, wherever you go, you hear the amiciable Fijian saying hello in their language 'Bula'. There are always smiles on their face. To a cosmopolitan gal from Hong Kong, this is very precious to me.

Shotover!

by TracyG

Try and have a go on the Shotover Jet on the Nadi River. It was pioneered in New Zealand and has now been taken all over the world. If you haven't been on one before, give this one a go, it is great fun. I miss the people in Fiji, they are some of the friendliest in the world.

Sarah97's General Tip

It was like a mirage when I first saw this island out of the blue sea. It was a really tiny island and I think that only couple of people can stay there. This is a famous place for Europeans to spend their long holidays forgetting hustle and bustle of the life!

Visit one of the islands - don't just stay on the mainland. Watch out for Mana, though - we got food poisoning and spent 3 days vomiting !!! We also found the staff a lot less friendly than I thought they would be - although there were one or two that I had fun with. I think Mana, although offering a lot of activities, is a little bit too commercial. One of the locals took us out on a boat around several of the other islands. Great way to have a nosey round to plan the next trip !!! This is a photo of Mana island:

For the keen or casual golfer I would take them straight to the Denarau Island Golf and Raquet Club. The quality of the facilites and the warm Fijian hospitality make it the ultimate golfing experience. The resort staff, especially those at the Naviti Resort on the coral coast.

At Suva, we went overland on a rough road for a few hours and eventually reached the Naroa River. The Fijian men who were our guides inflated rafts and then we went white water rafting along the River enjoying incredible grren and luxuriant scenery.

Grete's General Tip

We spent nine days on Beachcomber Island. A small coral island that you can walk around in approx. 12 min. !You stay in a huge dorm with only a ceiling above - allowing the cool breeze through at night. It works amazingly well. There's everything and nothing to do on the island : You snorkle, dive, sail, swim, sunbathe, feed the turtle or fish, go coralviewing or fishing, play volleyball, miniturare golf, paraglide, waterski, jetski, relaxe, dance, drink beer, meet people and the really nice people who work there. It's a rather pricy place to stay - but every meal is included and the food is great!!As they say themselves : ' So easy to get to.... so very hard to leave'

Fiji runs on Fiji time, so forget your watch, forget your schedules, and relax. You've got to take it all in, the people are extremely friendly and remember to use 'Bula' lots - hello in Fijian. The locals will love it, like any country where you are, an attempt at the language is better than none. When I was there we went straight out to the islands and it is probably the closest thing to paradise. If you don't get to the islands, at least do one of the day trips!! Playing volleyball and touch rugby against the locals, everybody is extremely friendly, however, beware the numbing effects of Kava

I stayed on the Island of Malololailai at Plantation Resort. There have been a lot of changes since I was there, but I will never forget just sitting on the beach and soaking it all in (and I mean soaking) Last night on the Island, had a fire on the beach, about 7 of us. The stars were out, and so was the bounty rum, and then I was out, and then the sun was out!
