BEACHCOMBER ISLAND: Night life in the Yasawas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beachcomber is very well known with Fiji travelers as the place to be. It is a very small island with a large dorm and wonderful buffet meals. The cost is a bit above average, at $F75 per night for a dorm, but it is well worth it for a couple nights. But be sure and reserve at least 2 weeks ahead during the busy times.

    Traps and Wolfhound in Suva
  • Tip Rating:
  • We went out a couple of nights to some of the popular night spots in Suva. My friends I was with are from there so that was cool. We spent some time at a place called Traps and another place called Wolfhound which is attached to the Bad Dog Cafe. It was a nice bar to stop by for a few drinks and there are tv's and pool tables. Traps is more dance oriented with good music. I learned the tradition of drinking taki style which is when everyone shares a pitcher, and the single glass. I didn't have a problem with it till I saw one guy pouring the last bit of beer from his bottle in there. Ugh. One thing that definitely caught my attention was the forwardness of some of the fijian guys after having a few drinks. Felt a bit like Mardi Gras. Someone grabbed my arse and then someone else took me by the arm. I looked up trying to figure out if I knew the guy and of course I didn't. I'm just giving an idea of the club culture. Traps wasn't as hands on like that and people were really getting their grooves on. I'd go back to both places.

Found this description of Traps somewhere else... "Traps Bar, Suva Perhaps Fiji’s best-known bar. It is the place to be seen in Suva. There are 2 bars and music is varied. Some nights they even feature live jazz and, if you’re lucky, poetry readings by some of Fiji’s most talented poets. It’s been described by the Lonely Planet guide book as "up-market, sophisticated and very popular for people who want to talk or meet others". Some things never change. Location: 305 Victoria Parade, Suva Traps crowd: Varied mix made up of expats, business executives etc - a more high-class crowd. Wolfhound Casual but smart - no flip flops

Kava drinking: Immersing yourself in the local culture.....

    Not much kava left now....
    by grets

After dinner, the captain (shown on the left of the photograph, in pink) and some of the crew, would fill a bowl of kava which they'd share with anybody who was interested. Most people took a mouthful or two just to try it, but I managed to drown eleven bowl of this slighly narcotic beverage. I was a little concerned about the amount of local "drugs" I'd consumed, would I be ill in the night, would it disturb my sleep? I needen't have worried, I slept like a log and felt right as rain the next morning.

Come as you are. Gentlement are expected to wear a shirt, no bare chests (that goes for women too).

    Blue Lagoon Cruises: Sing song
  • Tip Rating:
  • The crew very much join in the festivities of this cruise, they seem to get as much pleasure from it as we do. They all sing or play an instrument, and sit out on deck strumming and humming in the evening. We try to join in the sing-song after dinner, we don't know any of the songs, so we go to bed instead.

Blue Lagoon Cruises: Captain's Cocktail Party
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first night, the captain invites us to a cocktail party. The champagne never stops flowing and Tui (the third cook) plays guitar for us all to have a sing-song, whilst tasty little snacks are brought round. It really has set the mood for the rest of the evening (hopefully for the rest of the cruise).

Casual, this is not a cruise where you need to dress up.

    Nanuya Lai Lai: Beachside party
  • Tip Rating:
  • After dinner we were to have a singing competition: each nation against the others. The Germans (the majority of the cruise passengers) took it all very seriously, whereas we'd made a big joke of it all, singing Old MacDonald had a farm, bringing out the bungy jumping sheep and tying knotted handkerchiefs on our heads. All good fun. We had trouble singing for laughing so much and the crew were in stitches. We certainly gave the best entertainment value, but we were marked down for laughing whilst singing and for disturbing the other nations: we had made up some score cards with zeros on them, which we held up for all the others, plus cards with ten points on for us! Needless to say, we didn't win. The Germans did.

The silier, the better, this is supposed to be FUN.

Sunset from the deck: Take it all in, next week it's back to winter!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every eveing before dinner we were served cocktails and some small snacks. The second night dinner was a buffet at 19.30 - Fiji time - which meant that it was waaayyyy later, and by the time we actually got some food, we were all well sozzled! The weather was beautiful all throughout the cruise, which also meant that we had some lovely sunsets. One of my favourite nightlife pasttimes while travelling is to watch sunrise and sunset. All the better is enjoyed with a drink on deck of a lovely ship.

    Blue Lagoon Cruises: On-board party
  • Tip Rating:
  • Back on board the ship, we continue to party with the crew until the wee hours in the morning. In fact we were the last in the bar that night, as all the other nights. What party animals we were!
