Blue Lagoon Cruises: Captain's Cocktail Party

by grets

The first night, the captain invites us to a cocktail party. The champagne never stops flowing and Tui (the third cook) plays guitar for us all to have a sing-song, whilst tasty little snacks are brought round. It really has set the mood for the rest of the evening (hopefully for the rest of the cruise). Casual, this is not a cruise where you need to dress up.

Blue Lagoon Cruises: Sing song

by grets

The crew very much join in the festivities of this cruise, they seem to get as much pleasure from it as we do. They all sing or play an instrument, and sit out on deck strumming and humming in the evening. We try to join in the sing-song after dinner, we don't know any of the songs, so we go to bed instead.

Planters: The Best In The West

by reshmi

According to the locals, Planters nightclub is the best in the west of Fiji. It's tiny, and more like a bar (compared to Australian standards). But it's supposed to be more classy than most of the other clubs in the Nadi area. The main party night are Friday and Saturday. They make some nice cocktails. It has a mixture of locals and tourists. If you're not staying on Denarau Island (where the club is), you need to get there before 11pm otherwise they won't let you into the island. Normal dress standards are fine.

Ed's Bar: Local Bar/Pub

by reshmi

Ed's Bar is more of a pub than a bar, and it's where the young locals hang out. Weekdays are usually quiet, and things liven up a little more on Friday and Saturday nights. I went on a Friday night and had to pay for entry, but it included a free drink so it wasn't expensive. You can wear whatever you want.

O'Reilly's: Irish bar that's really not that Irish

by ashley05p

This is supposed to be an Irish pub - although there is nothing too Irish about it, besides the name. They have big screens for sports and then whent he sports are over it becomes a nightclub. Good mucis and dancing. Nice dress required.

Beachcomber bar!: Island bar!

by TracyG

If you can get to Beachcomber Island for the night (or longer) the bar there is great.Beachcomber has a traditional type band playing, as well as a sound system. - Make sure that you take part in the famous bula dance if you can! You can wear just about anything, but no shoes are needed as it is a sand bar.

Nanuya Lai Lai: Beachside party

by grets

After dinner we were to have a singing competition: each nation against the others. The Germans (the majority of the cruise passengers) took it all very seriously, whereas we'd made a big joke of it all, singing Old MacDonald had a farm, bringing out the bungy jumping sheep and tying knotted handkerchiefs on our heads. All good fun.We had trouble singing for laughing so much and the crew were in stitches. We certainly gave the best entertainment value, but we were marked down for laughing whilst singing and for disturbing the other nations: we had made up some score cards with zeros on them, which we held up for all the others, plus cards with ten points on for us! Needless to say, we didn't win. The Germans did. The silier, the better, this is supposed to be FUN.

Sunset from the deck: Take it all in, next week it's back to winter!

by grets

Every eveing before dinner we were served cocktails and some small snacks. The second night dinner was a buffet at 19.30 - Fiji time - which meant that it was waaayyyy later, and by the time we actually got some food, we were all well sozzled! The weather was beautiful all throughout the cruise, which also meant that we had some lovely sunsets. One of my favourite nightlife pasttimes while travelling is to watch sunrise and sunset. All the better is enjoyed with a drink on deck of a lovely ship.

Kava drinking: Immersing yourself in the local culture.....

by grets

After dinner, the captain (shown on the left of the photograph, in pink) and some of the crew, would fill a bowl of kava which they'd share with anybody who was interested. Most people took a mouthful or two just to try it, but I managed to drown eleven bowl of this slighly narcotic beverage. I was a little concerned about the amount of local "drugs" I'd consumed, would I be ill in the night, would it disturb my sleep? I needen't have worried, I slept like a log and felt right as rain the next morning. Come as you are. Gentlement are expected to wear a shirt, no bare chests (that goes for women too).

Golden Dragon: Wanna Party with the Locals?

by kepcsu

Traps and O'Reilly's are cool if you want to go hang out with a bunch of foreign backpacker's, but if you want to party with the locals you have to go to the Golden Dragon. It's all Fijians or other Pacific Islanders (most are studying at the University of the South Pacific). Everyone there is so friendly (especially if you're a white girl!) and you can drink the traditional taki style there. And if you're still ready to party when the main bars close you can always head to Birdland (just ask anyone on the street for directions). It's a pretty sketchy place and you'll probably be the only foreigner there! You're not supposed to wear flip flops, but I did everynight and they never stopped me. I think they only enforce it for locals.
