by bjmd22 If you want to go somewhere not many travelers go, try Ovalau. I fly from Suva for $F80RT. When you arrive you take a carrier into Levuka. From Levuka you can go even further off the beaten track to one of the small islands. This is arranged at the dive shop in town. The dive shop is also one of the only places to use the internet on the island. You should also know that the Cafe levuka that the guide books talk about has been replaced by the dive shop as the jumping off point for excursions. You can also go to a guest house called BOBOS farm, in a small village on the other side of the island. Leave a Comment

part of temple by kyoub The only major sight in Nadi is the Sri Siva Subramanila Swami Temple. This colorful Indian style temple was built from craftsmen flown in from India. It was quite crowded with worshipers the day that we were there so we didn't get very close. Leave a Comment

Abaca, the house we were staying at by Ela_S Abaca (pronounced: arbantha) is a little village in Fiji highlands (Viti Levu island), with only 14 houses and 86 inhabitants. It's one of six villages included in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and a gateway to wonderful mountain walks. For quite a cheap price (35FJD incl. 3 meals) you can live with the families in their houses. Don't forget to bring kava as a gift! You are also invited to participate in village life. You can learn how to cook local food, try the traditional dances or help with the garden work. I was really charmed by village and its surroundings and by hospitality of the people. Seeing and experiencing their everyday life was just awesome. I truly recommend. To get there you can arrange a pickup from Lautoka by calling Abaca Visitor Centre (666644, after two beeps dial 1234). You can also hire a 4WD truck in Lautoka. The journey through small mountain roads takes around 1 hour. Leave a Comment

Caqelai by Ela_S Caqelai (pronounced: vangelei) is a little island between Ovalau and Viti Levu. It takes not more than 10 minutes to walk along its diameter! The owners, Methodist Church of Fiji, run a small backpacker's resort on the island. The place is beautiful, full of coconut trees and sandy beaches, with good snorkeling and wonderful atmosphere. Snake Island by Ela_S Snake Island is a little piece of land just next to Caqelai, with one palm tree and some grass:) It was named after its most famous inhabitants - the sea snakes. If you're lucky, you can even see them! The walk is only possible during the low tide, when the path connects the two islands. It's very interesting, as you get to walk between the corals and you can see lots of marine life. Leave a Comment

My hill by bjmd22 While I was on Kadvu, I decided to do some hikng while the guy I was staying with was at work. I had already hiked all the beaten trails, so I decided to stike out down the side of what appeared to be a nice grassy hill. After 2 hours of tough barefooted hiking ( my fault) I was at the point of no return and realized that the hill I hoped to go back down to the water on was layed out at angles from 75 to 90 degrees, and was covered with 6 foot tall razor grass. It was so steep that I had to climb down several trees to get to the bottom. I was exhausted cut up, but proud of my hike. So if you see an inviting hill be prepared. Leave a Comment

kaka by bjmd22 The Kaka parrot is one of the birds found only on Kadavu. It is bright green with a red head and breast. They are pretty large, and can be heard all over the island. They are not however, fond of being photographed. They only seem to get close when the camera battery is dead, or when you are out of film. Leave a Comment

by bjmd22 While staying on Tavewa in the Yasawas, we got to know the locals pretty well. It turned out that Joe, one of the fijians, was actually from Nacula. While we were there the village on Nacula was having a village day to raise money for a water tank. Joe hauled about 12 of us with him to the island. We asked permission from the chief and it was on. There we sat in the middle of 300 fijian women, with afros. The people had returned home from all over Fiji for this. We got to see the opening cheifly Kava ceremony which was very elaborate. Then we got to eat with the locals. It was nice to know we were seeing the real thing and not a show. I knew this because we were the only tourists there! Leave a Comment

moored for the night. by scrooge1947 A 4 or 7 day cruise is a nice way to finish off your holiday trip. Blue Lagoon cruises go around the Yasawa Islands. Leave a Comment
