Around Denarau Island- things to do
Buying ice cream near the Sheraton villas - Fiji
Buying ice cream near the
Sheraton villas

After getting sick of the menu at Sofitel (not to mention the not so cheap food prices) we ventured out to other places/hotels in the area.

(You can take the BULA BUS which is free and tell the driver to stop at Sheraton, where you can find the ice cream kiosks and grocery store just across the hotel.)

A good place to go for ice cream , reasonably priced is outside the Denarau Sheraton villas. We enjoyed shopping also at the local convenience store where basic foodstuffs like bread, milk, noodles, etc are sold at near supermarket prices unlike at the resort where you can expect double their price. It was a shame we discovered it just around two days before we left. Still, we saved a great deal!

Go for a walk at night around the island to see lots of creatures like frogs, insects, etc. that normally you don't notice daytime. The boys had a ball counting how many dead frogs they saw, sigh!!

Catch an Island Ferry
Awesome Fiji offers great budget-priced multi-island stays with locally owned, basic hut properties on numerous islands in the Yasawas. Each day a ferry comes to provide transportation between the various islands. It's a great way to see the remote outlying islands and interact with the friendly people at a very reasonable cost.

    Fijian village homestays
G'day, just a tip for those travellers seeking a non-touristy experience which is also very cheap accommodation in Fiji. Different villages in Fiji now welcome travellers as homestay guests (not normal tourists). Every traveller that stays in one of these villages is initiated first as a member of the village in a traditional ceremony. Great for travelers with kids as they can play with all the children in the village who make friends instantly...Most villages are about F$60/night which includes all your meals, accommodation, laundry, childminding if you need it, etc...Plus the money you pay to the villagers when you get there goes straight back into the local community, which is definitely unique for Fiji! Good luck and happy travels...

    Village Homestays offer great value!
I have now spent several holidays at the villages offered by FijiBure.com and they have all been great!

The best part is that the hosts have been taking in guests through this project for several years now and really know how to give you value for money! Village homestays are definately a family type of destination - and not for rowdy backpackers.. here Fiji time rules - with only the sunrise and sunset being the two important times of the day!

There are a wide variety of activities available at all destinations - these include walks, exploring, snorkeling, fishing, mat making, etc.... this really is a great escape, a cultural experience and one that my kids love!

I have stayed at Namatakula (Loti Tuqiri's home); Namuamua (where the fabulous Ema looks after guests) and Malevu ... in the romantic Yasawas. Allhave been fantastic!

Take your family on a village homestay and see what I am talking about!

I never got round to going....
I never got round to going. But a man in the village called Moses (I think he was the eldest) invited me to an island towards the bottom of Fiji where they do Firewalking.

The locals also play touch rugby on the sand every sunday - Saula was always trying to rope me into playing but his cousin and I always went to the local pool hall instead.

    Lomaiviti
I went to Lomaiviti 2 years ago and i recommend that. (not for partying or shopping though.) It's not too much a fuzz getting there, a bit, but it's worth it. I tool the bus to Suva from where i got a bus-ferry-bus ticket to Levuka, Ovalau. The bus ride to Suva was enjoyable bc of the scenary, but the the next bus was rather uncomfortable so if i were to go again i'd think about flying. At Levuka, stay at Royal hotel. Levuka is a lovely place for just walking around. You'll find information on excursions at royal hotel and at Ovalau watersports, down Beach street.

From Levuka you can go to Caqalai, a paradise budget resort. I had a private bure on the beach for not much money at all. (prices appear to have gon up though since I was there.) You can snorkel off the beach. You book and get picked up at ovalau watersports. The boatride is not budget priced, but it's so lovely crossing the water in an open boat, so it's worth the money anyway.

For even more scenic transportation have them drop you off at the mainland where you can catch the bus.
Basically, Lomaiviti is well worth the money.

Ovalau watersports has lots of useful practical information on Lomaiviti: http://www.owlfiji.com/

    Mala Mala Wonders!
If you have a free day to do something- I highly recommend taking a boat ride out to Mala Mala Island, which is part of the Mamanuca Group of Islands.
There are daily departures from Port Denarau and go directly to Mala Mala and it only takes 35 minutes. Included in the price (89 F$ for Adults & 35 F$ for Children 5-15 yrs - as of November 2007) is a BBQ lunch, all soft drinks, tea, coffee and water and the equipment for snorkeling and fishing is provided.
The island is only 6.5 acres so it only take 10-15 minutes to walk all the way around. The sandy white beaches and warm blue water truly make this place paradise!

Take the bus from Nadi to Suva and you'll find cheaper and very interesting places to go to off the mainland, such as Levuka and Caqalai. The 4-5 hr busride is not only a means of transportation but a great way of seing the landscape. Bring earplugs cos on my bus they had a film on very loud.
