A village celebration

by bjmd22

While staying on Tavewa in the Yasawas, we got to know the locals pretty well. It turned out that Joe, one of the fijians, was actually from Nacula. While we were there the village on Nacula was having a village day to raise money for a water tank. Joe hauled about 12 of us with him to the island. We asked permission from the chief and it was on. There we sat in the middle of 300 fijian women, with afros. The people had returned home from all over Fiji for this. We got to see the opening cheifly Kava ceremony which was very elaborate. Then we got to eat with the locals. It was nice to know we were seeing the real thing and not a show. I knew this because we were the only tourists there!

Try Ovalau

by bjmd22

If you want to go somewhere not many travelers go, try Ovalau. I fly from Suva for $F80RT. When you arrive you take a carrier into Levuka. From Levuka you can go even further off the beaten track to one of the small islands. This is arranged at the dive shop in town. The dive shop is also one of the only places to use the internet on the island. You should also know that the Cafe levuka that the guide books talk about has been replaced by the dive shop as the jumping off point for excursions. You can also go to a guest house called BOBOS farm, in a small village on the other side of the island.

Natadola Beach.

by worldkiwi

This beach is on the south coast of the main island (Viti Levu). The trip there is along a very bumpy road (perhaps track is a better word). However, it is worth the bruised backside received in a van with poor shocks!Take your lunch and sunscreen. There is a newly opened resort there (it's small and unobtrusive), but I believe lunch there is very expensive. Walk along the beach and swim, or just sit in the shade and relax.A higlight at low tide is the area of rock pools that form just to the east of the hotel. Some of the pools are quite deep and a great place to swim or better still snorkel. Lots of fish remain in those pools and it is great fun watching them dart in and out of spooky looking grottos.

The Outer Reef-Go There!

by TashieKitten

We did a lot of diving around Treasure Island but for a special dive trip the dive master took us and some Kiwis to the outer reef, about a 2 hour (maybe less?) boat ride away. How fantastically bizarre to be in the middle of the ocean and see waves crashing! We did a drift dive out here too, Magic Passage, I think it was called...my first drift...it was spectacular! We snorkelled in the clearest waters, so clear that from the boat you couldn't tell how deep the water was. Brilliant!

don't stay in your posh resort! go out and discover the real fiji.take the ferry to vanua levu, rent a car there and venture yourself on the roads! you'll take the ferry from nasauri (close to suva from where a bus leaves) and arrive in nabouwalu.

The Namaka Inn is a great litle restaurant in Nadi. It is an area called Martintar, which you pass through on you way from the airport into Nadi. One of the owners is Hemet. He runs the place with his family. We never got menus, when we went in, he would simple just start bringing us food. Appetizers, curries, roti…..the food was always delicious and very reasonably priced. Hemet has a very quick wit and you will have an great time.

There are many things to do, that you should do, the rainforrest, the little villages. Go out and see them. There are many tour opperators who offer trips, but the better and nicer way is to just ask a local taxi driver to take you to places. Just at front discuss where to go and SET a price, because many of them will screw you otherwise for a higher price (which probably still will be cheap)

Visit the outer islands.I hired a driver for $100US to drive me from Suva to Nadi while showing me the sights on the way. He took me to his house for lunch and I met his wife and kids. What a way to see a country.
