The park is laid out in such a way that you can follow a path around at your leisure. Some sections are boardwalk high up in the rainforest canopy. Mainly a bird park, there are also turtles, iguanas and a small aquarium. Some birds are in aviaries, others fly free, or within larger but enclosed sections. We spent half a day here and had a really great time. When we visited in 2006 adult entry was $16, half price for children under 12, and special rates for families (Fijian Dollars). As well as running breeding programmes for some endangered species, Kula Ecopark is also runs a free educational programme for local schoolchildren. | | | | Lavena Coastal Walk, Taveuni | Tip Rating: | | | | |
It starts in the village of Lavena, goes along the coast and than up to Lower Wainibau Waterfalls. It takes about four hours return, but make sure you have more time to enjoy it. The trail is easy and the views are spectacular. We made it with the pouring rain on and off along the way. It didn't stop us at all and our determination was well rewarded:) Even with no sun the trail looks great - remote beaches, little Naba village, beautiful coastline and finally the waterfalls! The weather scared many tourists away so we mostly got to meet the locals along the way: the man with a huge bunch of bananas, another man collecting veggies for dinner, finally two guys coming back from hunting, carrying a wild pig (it was cut in half and each of them was carrying a part:)). Amazing experience and a must see!!! Leave a Comment Address: Lavena, TaveuniDirections: Get to Lavena by the local bus. After that you need to go to Visitor Centre, check in and pay a small fee. If it's raining, you can borrow the raincoat:) You can hire a local guide - call (679) 116 802

Having been on the Shotover Jet in Queensland, New Zealand, we jumped at the chance of signing up for the jet boat ride here in Fiji. It is only just down the lane from the hotel and they pick you up from your accommodation. The boats are the same style as they use in New Zealand, the main difference between the two trips was 20 degrees! (temperature that is).I sat in the front this time. Same speed, same turns, warmer water. I got soaked! Not just sprayed, the water actuallt poured over me, like somebody had emptied a bucket! Then we broke down! We seem to have a knack for breaking down in boats - I hope that doesn't go for the cruise too. The driver tried to repair it and sent off for another driver, who also couldn't manage to repair it. Eventually we had to clamber out and scramble up the bank to wait for the van to come across the golf course to pick us up. Back at base we were offered a refund or another trip. We are goign again of course! We had a different driver this time, Colin. He was a real showman. The same spin for the camera, then off we went down the mangrove rivers at high speed with a few spins and narrow misses of the sides, stilted huts, bridges etc. I think this was even better than the original jet boat in Queenstown, New Zealand. It was certainly longer and better value for money, although the canyons made the NZ trip more interesting. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Padi Discover Scuba Course | Tip Rating: | | | | |
I did this course on a rainy day at Malolo Island Resort (what else do you do on a tropical island in Fiji on a rainy day?). It consisted of theory work in the morning, along with a pool lesson, and was followed by a reef dive (maximum depth 12metres) in the afternoon. In the pool I was taught by Owen, who is about as funny a guy as you will come across. He is also a very patient instructor, and if not for him I may have never progressed to the reef dive as I was ready to chuck it in the minute I put my head under water! On the reef dive my buddy was Bilo, a much more serious (but extremely experienced) diver. He held my hand (literally) for the duration of the dive, and gave me the confidence to stay down there for 37 minutes! (I was absolutely terrified initially). If you're out there Bilo, I hope your hand has recovered! The reef I was taken to was called Barrell Head, which is near Mana Island. It was just like being in a 'Finding Nemo' movie. The corals were absolutely beautiful. I saw all kinds of fishes (including Nemo), as well as a shark (only little), and a stingray. The course cost $175 Fijian, and was worth every penny. I highly recomend this course to anyone who has always wanted to try scuba, but was too afraid. I will now move on to do my Open Water Diver Course thanks to the great introduction I got from these guys! Phone: 679 6666 738Website: www.subsurfacefiji.com
