  • Try Fishing, just buy some fishing rod and hooks and go for it, you will catch some good fish which you can BBQ at ssome sites (my hostel had a bbq)
And if you are a surfer or body boarder, well then you have heard of FIJI, I surfed at the Sigatoka Sand dunes, which is the fastest beachbreak I have ever surfed. And The spot in front of the Hideaways resort is good aswell, a nice steep reefbreak ( it is like 60meters paddle away) with easy acces due to a very deep channel, just watch the sharp reef.
    the surf is first class

    Kula Ecopark
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kula Ecopark is Fijis only wildlife park and makes for a great day out. The park is laid out in such a way that you can follow a path around at your leisure. Some sections are boardwalk high up in the rainforest canopy. Mainly a bird park, there are also turtles, iguanas and a small aquarium. Some birds are in aviaries, others fly free, or within larger but enclosed sections. We spent half a day here and had a really great time. When we visited in 2006 adult entry was $16, half price for children under 12, and special rates for families (Fijian Dollars).

As well as running breeding programmes for some endangered species, Kula Ecopark is also runs a free educational programme for local schoolchildren.

    Tavoro Waterfalls, Taveuni
  • Tip Rating:
  • After staying overnight in Lavena, we took a bus to Bouma, to see more waterfalls:) We went up the beautiful, well maintained trail and after 10 minutes we were already by the first waterfall! Swimming behind it was a great fun! Anna was even jumping from the cliff, I wasn't that brave. Anyway, make sure you take your swimsuit:)
The second waterfall is another half an hour up, with stunning views of the coast and palm tree forests on the way. There's less room for swimming but you can still do it.
It takes two more hours to get to the third one. However, after the rain the trail is very slippery and almost non-accessible. That's why we had to pass:) If you want to see the third waterfall, it's better to hire a guide in the Visitor's Centre and he'll show you the best way.

It starts in the village of Lavena, goes along the coast and than up to Lower Wainibau Waterfalls. It takes about four hours return, but make sure you have more time to enjoy it. The trail is easy and the views are spectacular. We made it with the pouring rain on and off along the way. It didn't stop us at all and our determination was well rewarded:) Even with no sun the trail looks great - remote beaches, little Naba village, beautiful coastline and finally the waterfalls!
The weather scared many tourists away so we mostly got to meet the locals along the way: the man with a huge bunch of bananas, another man collecting veggies for dinner, finally two guys coming back from hunting, carrying a wild pig (it was cut in half and each of them was carrying a part:)). Amazing experience and a must see!!!

    Jet boating
  • Tip Rating:
  • Having been on the Shotover Jet in Queensland, New Zealand, we jumped at the chance of signing up for the jet boat ride here in Fiji.

It is only just down the lane from the hotel and they pick you up from your accommodation. The boats are the same style as they use in New Zealand, the main difference between the two trips was 20 degrees! (temperature that is).I sat in the front this time. Same speed, same turns, warmer water. I got soaked! Not just sprayed, the water actuallt poured over me, like somebody had emptied a bucket!

Then we broke down! We seem to have a knack for breaking down in boats - I hope that doesn't go for the cruise too. The driver tried to repair it and sent off for another driver, who also couldn't manage to repair it.

Eventually we had to clamber out and scramble up the bank to wait for the van to come across the golf course to pick us up. Back at base we were offered a refund or another trip. We are goign again of course!

We had a different driver this time, Colin. He was a real showman. The same spin for the camera, then off we went down the mangrove rivers at high speed with a few spins and narrow misses of the sides, stilted huts, bridges etc. I think this was even better than the original jet boat in Queenstown, New Zealand. It was certainly longer and better value for money, although the canyons made the NZ trip more interesting.

    Coral Coast Snorkelling (Crusoes Retreat)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Crusoes Retreat offered daily snorkelling safari's from their resort. Each day we were taken to a different location, and each day there was something new and amazing to discover. There were all kinds of tropical fish, clams, and beautiful soft and hard corals. The water is wonderfully warm and crystal clear. Non snorkellers are welcome to come along and enjoy the trip from the boat. Crusoes safari operators are friendly, informative and fun. The boats are well maintained and comfortable. Best of all, unlike other resorts, Crusoes run their snorkel safari's free of charge!

    Padi Open Water Diver Course
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grant did his Open Water Diver Course with Subsurface Fiji. These guys are absolutely fabulous! They are proffessional, knowledgeable, and a whole bunch of good fun! Their boats and gear are all well maintained.
The course was run over 3 days and included 4 open water dives (all at different sites), all equipment and Padi certification. Cost of the course was $740 Fijian dollars, and the money was well spent. Grant had previously done the Padi discover scuba course, and had a couple of other dives under his belt, but other people who participated had no previous experience at all.
Subsurface Fiji run the full range of Padi courses.

    Padi Discover Scuba Course
  • Tip Rating:
  • I did this course on a rainy day at Malolo Island Resort (what else do you do on a tropical island in Fiji on a rainy day?). It consisted of theory work in the morning, along with a pool lesson, and was followed by a reef dive (maximum depth 12metres) in the afternoon.
In the pool I was taught by Owen, who is about as funny a guy as you will come across. He is also a very patient instructor, and if not for him I may have never progressed to the reef dive as I was ready to chuck it in the minute I put my head under water!
On the reef dive my buddy was Bilo, a much more serious (but extremely experienced) diver. He held my hand (literally) for the duration of the dive, and gave me the confidence to stay down there for 37 minutes! (I was absolutely terrified initially). If you're out there Bilo, I hope your hand has recovered!
The reef I was taken to was called Barrell Head, which is near Mana Island. It was just like being in a 'Finding Nemo' movie. The corals were absolutely beautiful. I saw all kinds of fishes (including Nemo), as well as a shark (only little), and a stingray.
The course cost $175 Fijian, and was worth every penny. I highly recomend this course to anyone who has always wanted to try scuba, but was too afraid. I will now move on to do my Open Water Diver Course thanks to the great introduction I got from these guys!

    Fish Feeding (Crusoes Retreat)
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had heard really awful reviews about the quality of snorkelling on the Coral Coast and so was not expecting much. At Crusoes Retreat I got a wonderful surprise! The snorkelling at this resort is great! And right off the beach too!. This is due to the joint fish feeding/ coral farming program Crusoes runs with the neighbouring Namaqumaqua Village. Every day the villagers feed the fish from their end of the beach at the same time the resort staff and guests feed them from their end of the beach. There is no fishing alowed in the vicinity. These 2 small things, along with the coral farming activities, are bringing the marine life back in startling numbers. The photo's below show some of the fish we saw only a few metres from the beach. In fact, the sea-life was so close, that our toddler only had to don his goggles, wade out, and stick his head in the water to see all kinds of colorful fish!
Congratulations to Crusoe's staff and the Namaqumaqua Village on their environmental efforts, and I hope it pays off!
