The Kula Eco Park

by IreneMcKay

This park is located near the Outrigger Hotel in Korotoga Village. Entry to the park is Fijian$20.This nature park has many different types of birds including Kula parrots, cockatoos, owls and goshawks. It also has bats, snakes and lizards. There is a wonderful marine display with living coral, fish and blue starfish. There are also a couple of turtles. There are some interesting jungle walks around the park with displays about different plants and their uses and different products the Fijians make from wood. There is also a swaying bridge to cross.

Sigatoka Sand Dunes

by IreneMcKay

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes are located just outside Sigatoka and make a pleasant and interesting place for a walk. The dunes have been forming over millions of years. There are two walks you can do around the dunes. The one we did took approximately 1 hour; the other is longer and takes around 2 hours. The shorter walk brought us up to the top of a sand dune then down to the Pacific Ocean. We then continued along the beach before crossing more dunes and walking through the Mahogany Forest back to the visitors centre.Entry to the dunes was Fijian$8. Several archealogical remains have been recovered at the dunes and the visitor centre displays some pottery remains that were found here. The Mahogony Forest showed the Fijian sense of humour with its tree huggers and its tree of soles - hung with the many shoes washed up on the beach.Wear sensible shoes if you go. I wore open sandals and almost...

Tavuni Hill Fort

by IreneMcKay

This hill fort is located near Sigatoga. It was built by a Tongan chief in the 18th century and was used as a defensive structure. There are fantastic views from the hill fort. The occupants could have easily spotted an attempted attack by their enemies and had piles of rocks ready to hurl at them in the event of an attack.Entry to the site cost Fijian$12 and this included a very informative and knowledgeable guide who brought the fort to life for us. She pointed out the foundations of the houses of the common people, the chief and the priest. She showed us the remains of the lovo oven where food was cooked and the killing stone where captured enemies were killed prior to being eaten.

Levuka Town

by IreneMcKay

If you are interested in history, you will love Levuka. Nowadays it is a sleepy, laidback, friendly backwater, but in its heyday it was the capital of Fiji. It was once filled with European sandalwood traders, beche de mer traders, American whalers and Fijian tribes. It had a reputation for drunkeness and immorality with countless wild, rough and ready drinking establishments - of which only the Royal Hotel remains. Due to the mountains surrounding Levuka and lack of flat land for expansion the capital was moved to Suva in 1882.Levuka is the place where Fiji was ceded to Britain in 1874 and there are memorials to commemorate this event a little out of town past the Pacific Fishing Company. In this area you will also find Nasova House which was once the govenor's residence and the thatched bure where Prince Charles stayed when he attended Fiji's Independence Ceremony in 1970.There is a...

visit suva capital of fiji

by hanspeter_W.

Suva is the capital and largest city of Fiji. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, in the Central Division, Rewa Province, of which it is the administrative center. In 1877, it was decided to make Suva the capital of Fiji when the geography of former main European settlement at Levuka on the island of Ovalau proved too restrictive. The administration of the colony was moved from Levuka to Suva in 1882. At the 2007 census the city of Suva had a population of 85,691 [1]. Including independent suburbs, the population of the Greater Suva urban area was 172,399 at the 2007 census

The must do of Fiji

by mashed_NZ

1) Go to Nadi town for some shopping and lunch. Fruit market and drink some kava with the locals.2) Denarau Island - Visit some of the hotels and have lunch or dinner there as a treat.3) Go to the Denarau Marina for some more great shops and The Hard Rock Cafe.4) Stay in a resort with beautiful white sand beaches.5) Take an island hop tour. Where you hire your own water taxi and visit all the different resorts on different islands. You can visit easily 10 different resorts in a day, while having a drink at each of their bars and lunch somewhere along the line.

Seaspray Day Sailing Adventure

by Dodo22

For those of you who are staying on the mainland, but want to see a bit of the islands this is the perfect way to go. The trip leaves the Denarau Marina, initially on the motorised catamaran Tiger IV which drops passengers off at Treasure and Beachcomber Islands. You disembark at Mana Island and transfer to an old sailing ship the "Sea Spray" which is 83 feet long. From here you travel out to Modriki (where the Tom Hanks movie "Castaway" was filmed) as well as Monu and Yanuya, going ashore to visit a traditional village as well as snorkelling. Over the years we have returned to Fiji each year and have tried out most of the boat trips. We would recommend this one as both best value for money as well as the best range of sightseeing etc.

Catamaran sailing on "Wanaka"

by Dodo22

If you are into sailing (as we are) but haven't been able to sail up to Fiji, this is your opportunity for a "real"sailing experience. The sailing catamaran "Wanaka" departs from Denarau Marina, takes you out to the outer reef break where you hopefully see the spinner dolphin. Then it's on to the sandbar for some snorkelling which was amazing. Very shallow water but with awesome visibility, coral and fish galore. We have done this trip several times. The first time we went into Musket Cove for lunch - we recommend the fish but there is a meat option and then (wind permitting) a fast sail home. However last year (2008) they took us to another, smaller resort just around the corner in Walu Bay. I have to say that we both enjoyed this venue much more than Musket Cove. A more local feel and not too many people around. It was like having your own private beach and lunch.
