See The Real Fiji - Not just the Tourists Version.

by philandbj

Wow! How lucky were we to experience the Sigatoka River Safari jetboat tour. This is as close as you'll ever get to being a part of the true Fijian culture. The tour takes you up the Sigatoka River in an adventure filled ride on a specially designed jetboat. There are plenty of thrilling manoeuvres to keep the adventure-lover happy but enough comfort and security features to reassure the not so adverturous. We went in a party of 9 ranging from my 5 year old son to my 56 year old mum and we all loved every minute of the tour. Your tour involves the jetboat ride up the river with an informative commentary along the way providing lots of interesting cultural, geographical and historical information. Then your guide takes you to a remote Fijian village located some 30 - 40 minutes upriver so you can experience Fiji as it really is - not just how it is in the tourist districts. The tour...

Relax with a few cups of Kava

by rosie235

The national drink of Fiji is Kava. Kava is a root which is dried and ground to a fine powder. There is a ceremony that takes place prior to drinking the Kava. They chant and sing and honour their special guests. There is a protocol to accepting the kava and drinking it. When you are offered the kava you must clap once , say Bula and accept the cup in both hands. You then skull the entire contents in one gulp then hand the cup back, clap 3 times and say Vinaka. Kava has a stupifying effect so the villagers are encouraged to drink it in moderation or else they risk getting too "relaxed" and will become lazy. Newlyweds are highly discouraged from drinking too much Kava. We were told that this was because it affected their ability to have children. The Fijians in Uncle Jim's village valued children and encouraged newlyweds to have children as soon as possible and to have many too. I guess...

Visit Sigatoka

by allikat

Sigatoka is a small but busy town on Viti Levus Coral Coast. Plenty of shops selling crafts, brightly coloured clothing and tacky souvenirs. The buildings are quite dilapidated, and the whole place has a somewhat rundown air. You can feel pressured in some shops - mainly the larger ones (also the more expensive ones). The smaller independant places seem a little more easy going. The Sigatoka Indigenous Womens Craft Centre, in the centre of town, is good to browse round, with wooden carvings, jewellery etc.

Kula Ecopark

by allikat

Kula Ecopark is Fijis only wildlife park and makes for a great day out. The park is laid out in such a way that you can follow a path around at your leisure. Some sections are boardwalk high up in the rainforest canopy. Mainly a bird park, there are also turtles, iguanas and a small aquarium. Some birds are in aviaries, others fly free, or within larger but enclosed sections. We spent half a day here and had a really great time. When we visited in 2006 adult entry was $16, half price for children under 12, and special rates for families (Fijian Dollars). As well as running breeding programmes for some endangered species, Kula Ecopark is also runs a free educational programme for local schoolchildren.

Go snorkelling

by allikat

Snorkelling is something you can do off most of the islands, although the reefs off the main island of Viti Levu aren't exactly 'pristine'. But you will still get to see a variety of fish, starfish, harmless sea snakes and sea cucmbers. Wear a t-shirt to stop your back from getting sunburnt, and take a disposable underwater camera. Most decent hotels will provide complimentary snorkel masks and flippers. All you need to do is float around and enjoy.

Visit the Mamanuca Group

by bsfreeloader

Easily accessible from Nadi, the Mamanuca Group features approximately twenty sun-soaked islands set in an azure lagoon. The area offers world class diving and snorkeling and can be visited on day trips or by staying at places ranging from budget backpacker joints to 5-Star resorts. Most of the islands are fringed by vibrant coral reefs and blessed with white-sand beaches. It’s impossible not to relax, and, with a Fiji Bitter in hand, it won’t take you long to be on Fiji Time.

CASTAWAY ISLAND RESORT

by wanderingbilly

STAYING IN THE OUTRIGGER RESORT HOTEL IN THE SOUTH OF VITI LEVU WE WENTED TO SEE MORE OF WHAT FIJI HAD TO OFFER, SO WE BOOKED AN ISLAND CRUISE WITH "SOUTH SEA CRUISES" THIS COMPANY HAS QUITE A FEW CRUISE OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM BUT OPTEDFOR THE ONE TO CASTAWAY ISLAND. WE WHERE PICKED UP FROM OUR HOTEL AND TRAVELEDTHE HOUR LONG TRIP UP TO DENARAU TO MEET OUR BOAT THAT WOULD TAKE US OUT TO CASTAWAY. BEFORE GETTING ON THE BOAT YOU ARE GIVEN A COLOURED WRISTBAND, THERE ARE DIFFERENT COLOURED BANDS FOR THE DIFFERENT ISLANDS THE BOAT STOPS AT ON THE WAY AROUND THE ISLANDS. WE WHERE LUCKY AS CASTAWAY WAS ONE OF THE LAST STOPS THIS MEANT THAT WE WOULD GET TO SEE ALL THE OTHER ISLANDS ALONG THE WAY. TO BE HONEST MOST LOOK THE SAME. SO AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF WE REACHED CASTAWAY AND BOY WAS IT BEAUTIFUL, ONLY 15 PASSENGERS A DAY ARE ALLOWED ON THE ISLAND WHICH ADDS TO ITS CHARM. WE WHERE...

Blue Lagoon Cruise

by reshmi

I can't emphasise how AWESOME this cruise is. It gives off a completely different atmosphere and vibe compared to staying at an on-land resort or with family in their houses. I went on the 3 day/2 night cruise, and has definitely been the highlight of travels in Fiji. It is extremely relaxing. Basically you cruise in a little 3-level boat through some of the small islands near the Yasawas. It's pretty much all inclusive (except alcohol will cost you extra but prices are reasonable). You get fed about 6 times a day, delicious food of course!!! And you have the chance to go scuba diving, snorkling, feeding the fish, lay on a hammock and take a nap, play volleyball, sing, dance, visit a local Fijian village, and mingle with the staff and tourists on board. It's also pleasing to see that the staff on board seem to be having just as good if not a better time than the tourists!!!

Meke

by reshmi

If you get the opportunity, participate in some traditional Fijian Meke dancing. The moves are very simple, and the locals probably will be happy to show you and to dance with you. Traditionally the males and females dance separately, however for tourists they take a much more flex approach.

Kava Ceremony

by reshmi

Participate in a Kava ceremony and try kava. The kava plant roots are ground up so that it turns into a drink. If your lips and tongue go numb, don't freak out, that's normal!!!! Kava is a part of the religious and cultural life of Fijians. It is most commonly used today as a means of relaxation, similar to how alcohol is used in Western societies.
