Explore the west coast by car

by Sans70

Hire a car from Nadi Airport and take a day trip up the west coast. There are many towns and villages to explore along the way, and some these towns have large local markets which sell local foods and handicrafts. Make your way to Raki-Raki, hire a charter boat, and spend a day on the many surrounding islands.

Visit A Fijian Village

by sunshinejo

The village I visited was on the island of Naviti, and it was arranged for us to visit through our accomodation. When visiting villages in Fiji, it is important to show respect to the people who live there. Always be sure to cover shoulders and knees, and it's polite to bring something to offer to the villagers - either Kava or some money in an envelope. If you're unsure, then the staff at your accomodation should be able to advise you. After we had been shown around the village, some of the local women brought hand-made jewellry and sarongs down to the beach to sell. I bought a couple of bracelets and a necklace made out of shells which I still wear to this day - the cost to me was minimal, and I like the fact that they were hand-made and I helped somebody by buying them. I think the thing that surprised me most about the village, was how pretty it was. I think that I expected it to be...

Scuba Course

by mrsriddler

I learned to scuba dive in Fiji. I was on my own staying at a backpackers resort and saw a sign for a scuba beginner's course and signed up. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! I took a one-week openwater course and later (on other trips) I went on to become advanced in deep diving, night diving, and wreck diving. The water in Fiji is so warm, it makes a great place to learn to dive. There are lots of (small)sharks and rays, and beautiful fish. It was such a great experience.

A trip to Mana Island

by Rusket

Mana is a small and very beautiful island in the Mamanuca Islands in the Western Division of Fiji, a short and wonderful boat journey from Nadi. There is a bungalow resort there, and two backpacker's. I will not write a lot about it here, since I have built a separate Mana Island page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/97191/1cc770/

Village visit

by eenelfje

When you stay at Oarsmans Bay there is an option to visit the nearby village. The village is very nice and the people are very friendly. You will see the whole village, meet the people and visit the school. When I was there we were invited to attend a wedding ceremonial. It was so nice. First the bride came with the women and then the groom with tapa clothing wrapped around his waist. The ceremony was in Fijian language and included the presentation of the whale tooth, the most precious thing in Fiji. When the first part of the ceremony was finished and the bride and groom were presented food, we could join the people of the village for a Fijian meal. So delicious.

Hiking

by eenelfje

On Ovalau I booked the Epi tour. This trip is really wonderfull. Epi picks you up from the Royal Hotel in Levuka. From Levuka it is approx. 1 hr by car to Lovoni village, a village in the middle of a crater, where he lives. There you are supposed to buy some Kava FJD 1 to present to the chief. After presenting the Kava to the chief you are welcomed in the village. Epi tells a story about the village and the history of the people from Lovoni. Then you go to his mothers house who has prepared a delicious real Fijian meal. You enjoy your meal sitting on the floor. After lunch Epi takes you on a hike up on the hills of the crater. A wonderfull hike. Along the way he tells you about the plants and trees and their medical value and use. He also picks mandarins and papayas from the trees for you to eat. After this daytrip he drives you back to Levuka. This tour is from 10.00am to 19.00pm and...

Levuka - old capital of Fiji

by Ela_S

From Taveuni we took the plane to the main island, then a bus and a boat to the island of Ovalau. After another bus ride we reached the ex-capital of Fiji, Levuka. The town was established as a whaling settlement and quickly became very lively and entertaining place. Today, Levuka is a charming, quiet place with interesting buildings, reminding of its colonial past. For seeing the town itself you only need an hour or two. However, you can book a tour to Lovoni village, situated in the crater of the volcano! Beware of Sundays - there's no tours and no boats out.

Probably the most developed part of Taveuni. If you're looking for the high standard accommodation, that's where the luxurious resorts are situated. There is also a camping site and some backpackers' lodges. The town is growing thanks to the proximity of airport. It's a good gateway for diving and snorkeling tours. We came there on our last day at Taveuni. We stayed at the camping site and spent a wonderful afternoon kayaking and snorkeling.

Tavoro Waterfalls, Taveuni

by Ela_S

After staying overnight in Lavena, we took a bus to Bouma, to see more waterfalls:) We went up the beautiful, well maintained trail and after 10 minutes we were already by the first waterfall! Swimming behind it was a great fun! Anna was even jumping from the cliff, I wasn't that brave. Anyway, make sure you take your swimsuit:) The second waterfall is another half an hour up, with stunning views of the coast and palm tree forests on the way. There's less room for swimming but you can still do it. It takes two more hours to get to the third one. However, after the rain the trail is very slippery and almost non-accessible. That's why we had to pass:) If you want to see the third waterfall, it's better to hire a guide in the Visitor's Centre and he'll show you the best way.

The coastal walk is a main attraction, but the village itself is very cute. Being situated where the road ends, it's a very remote place. Make sure you take a look and have a chat with the local people. Just remember to obey the village protocole!
