One of the most enjoyable ways to explore your little area of Fiji is to Kayak. Most of the resorts offer free use of them, for the duration of your stay. It is not difficult at all, and is OK for all fitness levels. Use a life jacket if your swimming skills are poor, (although they are very stable), or simply don't go out too deep...the waters are so clear that you will see an amazing aray of fascinating and beautiful sea-life without having to go far from shore anyway. This was the case at both Crusoes Retreat (Coral Coast), and Malolo Island (Mamanucca Group), where we stayed.
The photos here are just a small sample of the sea-life that you will find only a few metres from shore if you sit quietly in your kayak.

If at all possible I highly recomend taking a seaplane flight from Nadi to your island destination. The views are absolutely spectacular, providing a perspective that is not possible from a boat. It also of course, makes transfer time very fast...we were on our island within 15 minutes of leaving the airport.
The check-in staff are very helpful and kind, they organised to have our wedding album (it was catching up to us from our previous destination but missed the flight), to be flown over to us on the next flight free of charge even though our island was not a scheduled stop for that flight. They also have a sense of humor, on hearing of my fear of planes I got laughter, and the coment "you'll only land in the water anyway" (OK if your not also afraid of fish!).
The pilot was a Canadian who looked like a schoolboy, but he assured me he was much older than he appeared and an experienced flyer. He did seem to know his stuff, and got us there on a windy day with no troubles!
We got our flight on a package deal, so I'm not sure of prices, I think they start at aroundUS$120.

  • The Yasawa Flyer - Fiji
    The Yasawa Flyer
    by dancinbudgie, 3 more photos
We used 'Awesome Adventures' to book our transfer from Malolo Island to Port Denarau. The boat is known as the Yasawa Flyer or simply the 'Yellow Boat'. The trip took about an hour. The 'Flyer' was clean and comfortable. Toilet facilities were well maintained. Snacks and drinks are available on board, as well as information on all of their other available tours. Staff were courteous.
The actual boarding of the 'Flyer' was a bit of fun for us...it was pelting down with rain and we had to get from the jetty at Malolo to the Flyer on a smaller boat. This had an awning over the top, but the sides were open.Everyone got wet, except the people from Likuliku who had been provided with raincoats...I guess those are the perks when you pay Likuliku prices!!
The cost of the trip was around $45

    Blue Lagoon Cruises

This is an extract from my journal:

We have a drink in the pool bar while we wait for the Blue Lagoon pickup. There seems to be an awful lot of time wasting today, I suppose we haven't mastered the "chill-out" yet, after rushing around New Zealand. From our hotel we call in the airport, where we wait for 40 minutes for someone to arrive on an international flight, then another 1 hr 40 minutes wait at the dock before boarding.

We get carried away with the cocktails in the bar while we wait, and with the merchandise in the shop. The staff put on a fashion show, and give us a lovely introductory chat about the cruise.

It is a short bus journey to the wharf to board the Yasawa Princess. We realise that we are upgraded to a club cruise at this stage, no-one has said anything!

There are 20 cabins on board, all with windows out towards the deck, double bed, wardrobe and a dressing table, as well as a shower / toilet.

We took a four day, three night cruise, which took us along the Yasawa Island Group in the western division.

The Yasawa flyer is a boat ran by Awsome Adventures. If you are going out to one of the islands chances are you will ride it. The trick is to get your monies worth. Most trips cost at $F40 oneway. So if you plan to stay in the islands and hop around a BULA PASS may be the way to go. It costs 199$F for 7 days or 265 for 21 days.
The boat is really nice with and air conditioned cabin and sun deck. Oh yeah, this may not sound important but they sell ice cream on the boat! You stay on the islands for 3 weeks and you will be looking for ice cream too! It takes about 5 hours from Nadi to the furthest point, but it is an enjoyable ride.

Travel around Fiji is a bit like a rollercoaster ride, the roads are bumpy and full of potholes.

The cheapest way to get around is by bus also known as rattlers. These are buses with no windows and sound like they could blow up at anytime, but they are an experience to have. Rattlers run to most towns and villages around Fiji, and you wont have to wait more than 15 minutes for one to pick you up.

  • Island Express - Fiji
    Island Express
    by IcemanNZL
The Island Express is another way to get to the outer islands. This will take you a few hours to a day depending how far your resort is from the main island, you have to stop at every island resort to drop off passengers which is a good way to see where to plan your next holiday to Fiji.

This is a very relaxing way to travel around, seeing the island resorts and deep blue water while you relax in the sunshine.

Disembarking is all the fun, jumping from the Island Express to a small boat to take you to shore is interesting, although i have never seen anyone fall off.

    Bula Pass

  • Many people have asked about the specifics of the Bula Pass so I thought I should create a tip about it. The Bula pass can be bought for 7 or 21 days. It is good for as much travel in the Yasawas as you can fit in. Here are the specifics and rules:
1.) The boat is the Yasawa flier, it leaves form the marina in Denarau just outside Nadi at 9am every morning and returns at 6pm .

2)You may NOTtravel from Nadi to Beachcomber. But you may travel from another island to Beachcomber.
    3) You may Not travel from Beahcomber to Nadi. But you may travel from Beachcomber to another island.
    4) The site asys that youi must make reservations for each leg of you journey. This is just Not true. From the tiny resorts just get in the water taxi out to the Flyer and tell them where you want to go. No problem.
    5) You can only leave the Marina 1 time with the pass, once you are back to the marina your pass is invalid.

I hope this helps clear things up. The web site is really confusing.

    Musket Cove Plane
    by IcemanNZL
Musket Cove Resort, situated on Plantation Island is lucky enough to have an airstrip, you can take a small plane to the island which takes roughly 20 minutes.

This is a good way to see islands and reef formations and is also the quickest way to get to your island resort paradise.

There are several options to get from Nadi to Suva. You can go buy taxi. Or by local bus.

When you go buy bus you can choose two options.

The Coral Sun Express bus is an airconditioned coachbus. A good bus. This bus must be booked in advance. If you stay at Nadi Bay Hotel they pick up from that hotel in the morning. FJD 19.

The Pacific Express. Is a local bus. Just buy your ticket at the departure stand. FJD 18.

The busride to Suva is a nice ride.
    And is 3,5 hrs.
