by Greyraven23

We took Air New Zealand from LA to Fiji... it was a great flight and was only about half full. The trip back was more crowded and had a 4 hour layover in Honolulu, but they still had great customer service. I wouldn't recommened driving as the people there tend to drive on the extreme side... best to grab a taxi and hang on for your life.

The local buses. They can be late or not come at all at times, but they're a cheap and easy way to get around. On the coral coast you can catch the highway buses, which stop wherever people want them to (so don't be in a hurry!), or the express buses, which stop at the resorts along the way from Suva to Nadi and Singatoka. Taxi's can be expensive but you may be able to negotiate with some drivers to go somewhere for the cost of a bus fare if they're going in your direction anyway. Taxi's don't have meter's so make sure you ask the price before you get in! Another way to get around is to hitch, which a lot of Fijian's do. It's customary to offer the equivalent of a bus fare for the ride. Caution should be excersised when hitching, and we were told it's not good to do around Suva or Nadi. Along the coral coast we had no problems, and cars will often stop even if you don't signal them to....

Any way you can. This picture was taken from the back of a truck on Levuka, and island just east of the main island. I'd stayed on an even smaller island, Leluvia, for a couple of days and was due to fly out to Australia later that day. I'd just got back onto Levuka by speedboat, this truck was taking me back to the capital, Ovalau. I then had to fly back to Suva and get round to Nadi airport on the other side of the island. The flight, with Fiji Air, was great. The airfield was a field. It was a 3 O'Clock flight, but this is Fiji. At about 4, the tannoy(!) kicked into life. 'We're sorry for the delay. Since there's a few of you (about 10), we're going to need the big plane, but we're having trouble finding it'.Later, 'We can't find the big plane, so we're going to get 2 small planes instead'.Later, 'We've found the big plane. It's on its way!' The big plane was a 20 seater. Classic.

Air Pacific is a wonderful airline! All Fijian staff, started in Fiji. Take taxis...I would never drive here...it's crazy. I thought something was odd about the roads we were on and I finally realized that (in Nadi on Suva) we had not seen a single traffic control device. Boats are the way to go to hop from island to island, unless you can afford the helicopters that do fly to some of the islands.

Airliners are the normal way to get to Fiji though some people are lucky enough to be able to sail there on a yacht. Transfers to Beachcomber Island from Nadi or Lautoka can be arranged when you book. Once you're on Beachcomber it only takes about 10 minutes to walk right around the island so there is not really any need for cars etc. Transport off the island is boat, yacht or seaplane to other islands and dive sites.

by Yohaho

Air Pacific, Qantas, Ansett, Air New Zealand and canadian Airlines have flights connect Australia, New Zealand and North America to FijiWell, I would suggest travellers to take taxi as they are very cheap when shared by a few people. I have also taken buses and I think they are fine.

I flew into Nadi and used hotel transportation to where I was staying. This was a learning trip for me. I found that the local buses are fun. Besides being inexpensive they allow you a different perspective of the country you are visiting.
