I met a Japanese businessman at the hotel in Suva and he visited Fiji regularly. He told he had travelled between Suva and Nadi many times and he reckoned it is safer to take taxi than to catch the plane. Well,I flew once between Suva and Nadi and I survived.

While staying on the main island another solo female traveller was attacked by a taxi driver so I would be try to always take taxi's when you're with other people. Also, it's quite common for local Fijian men to hook up with the single woman visitors in hopes of going home with them. It actually happened to a friend of mine. She brought him home to Canada, married him and he was 'bad news'. He ended up going back to Fiji alone.

Well. Ok, here is what I learned. Never wear a t-shirt with any information on it such as a school or state or business or.... Traveling alone for a man is always easier, it gives less of an opening to a street hustler. On health, I learned to not trust the local water and to go into island walk and effort and move into the local flow as much as you are able.

Alone At Night

Don't walk outside alone at night...especially if you're female. The crime rate is high in Fiji, so could be mugged. It should be fine at Hotel/Resort complexes though.

For some reason I felt less comfortable in the the streets of Nadi than many supposed to be dodgy places, even at daytime. I dont know why, though.

I lived in Fiji and was robbed numerous times...I'm also an idiot so it was partly my fault, but be careful like you would anywhere!

Dont worry your Family

If you are going out into the Yasawas, shoot the folks back home an email that you wont be in contact for a while. There is no way to communicate until you reach Beachcomber!
