Nadi Things to Do

  • The Tourist Info in Port Denarau

You will find a tourist-information-stand right at the place, where the tenderboats will unload their cruise-passangers. You will find various brochures there and local tourguides giving you infos about what you can do on your own on this island, in case that you have not booked one of the - mostly quite overpriced - tours that are offered in the...

  • you will see great yachts in Port...

Port Denarau is a great place to watch out for some really exclusive yachts, just take a look at my extra pictures here as well. Quite mysterious was for me that giant grey yacht in my main picture and my 3rd picture, it looks like a russian spyboat from a James Bond Movie ! ;-)But my favorite ship there was of course the 2mast-sailingyacht that...

  • great dance-shows

In the port of Port Denarau you will find a lot of shops around a small square, where you will be able to see various folk-dances of the local people !This happens of course mainly when big ships like ours arrive in port and they had a performance of about 1 hour in the morning and another show again in the afternoon. You will find some chairs there...

Nadi Restaurants

  • Not just steaks

We go to the Steakhouse for dinner. It is really good. Everybody else has steak, but I opt for fish marinated in chilli and coconut. Very enjoyable. The next day we enjoy a drink by the pool, there is a swim-up bar where you can have cocktails or soft drinks. They also serve snacks poolside, the usual sandwiches and burgers.

  • Great Service

This is one of Nadi's more expensive restaurants, but well worth the extra money! The staff are always a second from you so if you require something all you need do is look their way and bang they are there! The whole meal! There was nothing I could say that wasn't 5 star.

I adore cocktails, and they make some very good ones here at the Regent. Mine is usually a pina colada - one of my favourites - but on this occasion I had a rum punch!

  • The Awesome Catamaran

The Awesome Adventure-catamaran is another ship that can be taken on a regular basis to hop from one Fiji-island to another one, see more details below in my link !This giant catamaran is able to transport more than 400 passangers at the same time and such a catamaran will also be able to sail much faster than an ordinary tenderboat. This is why it...

  • SV Spirit of the Pacific

The sailingyacht "SV Spirit of the Pacific" might be a great place for you to take a cruise on a small boat around the Fiji-islands and other areas of the Southern Pacific. Read more about this great ship in my link below ! I was lucky to see this great sailingyacht from a short distance when approaching Port Denarau by our tenderboat.

  • I got here on a cruise on the Dawn...

I came to Port Denerau onboard of the cruiseship Dawn Princess, a giant cruiseship with a capacity of more than 1900 passangers and about 1000 crewmembers and like almost any other big ship we had to anchor off the island and get in by tenderboats. That has to be done in many islands, BUT here in Port Denerau the tenderboats will need about 40...

  • a great collection

There are so many shops with great wooden souvenirs of all kinds and sizes, BUT the problem with all of these great souvenirs is the fact that you might get into severe problems at the customs-control in Australia - in case that your cruise will end there like mine.Wooden items of all sorts are forbiddent to be taken into Australia and even when...

  • Always Haggle

Often during the day there is an open air market in Nadi town. It will contain pretty much anything you would find in the little semi-authentic semi-touristy shops throughout Nadi town, such as artwork, crafts, and clothing, for much less than in the shops. Definately haggle (may be easier in the market), some things are just unbelievably...

Nadi Local Customs

  • English is spoken everywhere

For most tourists it will be good to know that english is spoken all over the Fiji-islands and besides Hindustani and Fiji english is also one of the 3 official languages of the Fiji-islands. The Fiji-islands have a total population of a bit more than 800.000 inhabitants, living on various islands with a total size of 18.333 km2,( that is a bit...

  • Watch out for the Fiji-kilt

The Fiji-kilt is part of the national costume and so you might see men wearing a kilt all over the Fiji-islands. Here in my first 2 pictures it is the porter of a large hotel next to Port Denarau who will assist arriving guests with their luggage. In my 3rd and 4th picture it is a local policeman and in my last picture you will see that even the...

BULA, BULA ! or simply BULA ! is something you will hear a lot of times, when walking around Nadi. Nadi Warnings and Dangers

  • some mis-organisation by Princess...

On the total I was quite happy with my cruise onboard the Dawn Princess, BUT in Port Denarau there was a lot of very bad organisation as well:OK, we had 1700 passangers onboard and we had just 4 or 5 tenders with a total capacity of not much more than 120 people at a time. The tenders needed for one way from the ship to the port 40 minutes, and then...

  • shopping temptations

In Port Denarau I saw some of the most beautifull woodcarvings as well as rare, exotic sea-shells for sale in the souvenirshops. The only problem for me was the fact that I am not an expert about seashells and I dont know which ones might be considdered as "endangered species" and confiscated by any customs-controll in the world. The other problem...

  • Animals and speed bumps on the road

If you rent a car like we did you have to watch out for animals like cows and horses on the road. This are BIG animals and can do some serious damage. Also as you pass by different villages there will be many speed bumps. You dont want to do damage to your vehicle so slow down.

Nadi Tourist Traps

  • Nadi Town

Pretty much all of Nadi Town is a tourist trap. I think you should go and walk around and at least check it out. Its convenient because the town is close to Denearau Island were all the resorts are at. But its like being in TJ or something with vendors trying to get you into their store. We didnt experience any sword sellers but we did experience...

  • What a Trap!

Well, every hotel on Denarau Island is a trap and a pleasant one, compared to the "real" Fijian accomodation anyway. Go to Westin, Denarau. You would be better off not to try to avoid it!

  • "Gifts" and "Donations"

Even when you're told not to be tricked into buying anything with a sappy story or roundabout phrasing, it may be more difficult than you think when the moment arises!Upon walking into one shop, the owner tied a cheap little necklace around my neck saying it was a "gift." For the hospitality I was asked, upon leaving, to give a "donation" for the...

Nadi What to Pack

  • Don't forget the sunscreen

Pack as little as possible,it will mean less to lug around, especially if you are going to some of the out islands by boat. In Fiji's tropical climate, light cotton casuals are best. When outside the tourist areas you will need to cover-up. Women should take along some long dresses or skirts for this purpose. Also be sure to take a sarong or two...

  • Always take less

Most upmarket hotel rooms offer luggage storage for all but the largest cases but if you are travelling/moving from hotel or hotel or particularly out to the islands, you are probably better taking a smaller bag, and making it soft rather than a hard case. As is typical of most beach type holidays, you always end up taking more than you need/wear....

Favorite thing: If you find yourself in mainland fiji or on one of Fijian Islands vacationing, you must and I mean this from the bottom of my salivating heart, you MUST try the pineapple.. They are juicy and extremely sweet and tasty and make the best healthy breakfast.

Every morning we would get up and after taking a shower, we would stop by the nearby fruit shop to get a couple of pineapples.. Though small, they're very delicious and would make our day pleasurable.. Gotta try it...
