    Nadi Warnings and Dangers

On the total I was quite happy with my cruise onboard the Dawn Princess, BUT in Port Denarau there was a lot of very bad organisation as well:OK, we had 1700 passangers onboard and we had just 4 or 5 tenders with a total capacity of not much more than 120 people at a time. The tenders needed for one way from the ship to the port 40 minutes, and then...

    Nadi Warnings and Dangers

In Port Denarau I saw some of the most beautifull woodcarvings as well as rare, exotic sea-shells for sale in the souvenirshops. The only problem for me was the fact that I am not an expert about seashells and I dont know which ones might be considdered as "endangered species" and confiscated by any customs-controll in the world. The other problem...

  • The birds have it

Malolo Lailai Island Things to Do

One thing I did do whilst on the island was take time out to shoot some birds. There were species here I was unfamiliar with and, due to the types of trees and the fact that they're spaced out, it made it easier to shoot them than when I'm at home in Australia. You didn't have far to go to get a picture of a bulbul, they're at every breakfast table,...

If you're into water sports then you may well enjoy your stay on Plantation Island. So much to choose from, diving, snorkelling, fishing, canoeing, sailing, parasailing, swimming and riding on something towed behind a boat, not to mention swimming. The stuff like canoes, catamarans etc, can be hired at reasonable rates while snorkelling gear and...

  • The Village church

    Viseisei Things to Do

Fijians are Christians these days and they enjoy freedom of religion. In most villages the villagers share the same religion and in Viseisei they are all Methodists. Thus the village church is named after John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church. The church is very simply fitted out and looks very much like a little Methodist Church would look...

  • Village Monuments

    Viseisei Things to Do

In Viseisei there are two monuments to the fallen in wars gone by. They each stand in very prominent positions in close proximity to the chief's house. The larger of the two features the three main weapons of war used by the fijians in early times. One was like a mallet used to hit the enemy over the head. the second was a "neckbreaker" which...

  • The Chief's House

    Viseisei Local Customs

The chief's house stands in pride of place in the middle of the village. It is usually marked with a circle of stones around it. The house is always elevated in keeping with the tradition that the chief is higher than anyone else. All the villager's houses are low to the ground. When the chief dies, his brother (if he has one) becomes the chief....

    Singatoka Things to Do

Particularly on a Friday or Saturday, these markets are probably the best in the country. Sigatoka Valley is the 'Salad Bowl' of Fiji, so all the wonderful produce comes through here. • What not to do!

    Singatoka Things to Do

There is no better advice of what not to do in Fiji while on your tour of the Singatoka area. The pottery village visit should be obliterated from your itinerary because it is way under any expectations. What you see is a misery of artistic performance. On top of this, the curators are overly self-confident and quite adamant in demanding a...

    Tavewa Island Transportation

The main ferry meets the local resorts boats out in the middle of the lagoon. Each resort has its own 18-20seat boat which they seemed to fit more people on. • Clear, warm water

    Nathula Island Favorites

The water was a snorkeller's delight, crystal clear and comfortably warm. The reef was very shallow and thus ideal for snorkelling. • Paddle boarding

    Nathula Island Things to Do

The cruise ship keeps a couple of paddle boards on board which they take ashore with them to the various islands. You are free to use these at any time, and it is good fun. It is something like sea kayaking, but you sit with one leg either side of the board with your feet dangling in the water, so it is easier to balance. Even my father had a go,...

  • Underwater dangers

    Nathula Island Warnings and Dangers

We were warned to be careful about corals, not stepping on them or breaking them off. Touching them can cause a rash, and obviously doesn't do much for conservation. Also found in and amongst the reefs here, is a very dangerous sea snake, which although not usually aggressive, is best avoided. I became quite alarmed when I saw this snake-shaped...

The village we visited is still very traditional (read primitive) - the only building to have electricity is the church and water comes from a spring.
