A marae is a sacred outdoor temple where religious ceremonies and sacrifices are said to have taken place. You can identify a marae by the way the rocks are placed to form a rectangular shape. In French Polynesia there are national marae which belonged to the supreme chief and where human sacrifices took place. There are also ancestral marae built on the lands of large families who had ancestors in common. On Bora Bora you will find the following marae:
Taharuu Marae, Marotetini Marae, and Aehautai Marae.
