Because I was the only one in the group who speaks French, it was up to me to talk to vendors and order lunch. We all had chop steak, chips, and water or soft drinks. I personally took an Orangina. All I bought were 20 postcards for 1/4 of my list. I still have my postcard list from that trip came from Tahiti. We visited a farmer's market with even more unusual fruits, some I hadn't even seen at breakfast that morning.

On returning, my brother, Kim, and I found 1000 Tahitian francs, dividing it equally amongst ourselves. I don't know how Kim spent her lot, but my brother took a liquid lunch (a local beer called HINANO) in spite of being only 16 years old. As for me, I flagged down a truck and headed for Papeete. The restaurant at our hotel had already closed and the cuisine de Beach Comber was too expensive for my tastes. It was against the rules for even the adults to stray away from the group. However, I was too hungry to care about the rules. I knew how to flag down a truck, I knew the language, and felt safe in Tahiti. Furthermore, my parents, the leaders of our group, were still in Moorea. I went to the same parking lot of truck-restaurants and took chopped steak and chips with bottled water to wash it all down. On the way back to the hotel, I met a native named Patrick Tai, who instantly became my friend and we have written a bunch of letters since then.

The morning beauty just from our hotel

That morning, I discovered the true beauty of Tahiti after being awakened by a stray rooster. From the porch of the hotel on top of the hill, you could see the tropical plants and the Pacific Ocean which was as blue as the sky. My brother woke up right early by his standards and found a coconut as big as his head, and both have roughly the same density and contents. There was a big breakfast buffet around the pool which consisted of croissants (Tahiti is owned by France), all manner of jelly, and all kinds of fruits (some I hadn't even seen in Puerto Rico the previous January, for example, a red one with bumps).

That morning, Mama, Daddy, and Grandma took an optional tour of a neighbouring island called Moorea. So, it was up to Mrs. Graves and me to lead the group from Mechanicsville. We went down the hill and across the road to the beaches of a more opulent hotel (The Beach Comber). I got tan and bathed in the Pacific Ocean. The water was as warm as it was in Puerto Rico, good and warm, but you had to mind the step in order to avoid sea anemones. Two girls from Westminster (Tiffany and Gena) rented a paddle boat for half an hour.

We might not have been staying at the Beach Comber down the hill, but they did sure enough give us a 5-star (or shall I say 5-lei) sendoff. Before supper, my parents and the majority of the ladies in our group wore Tahitian skirts called "pareau". At 19.30, the threw us a going-away feast which consisted of the following- French bread, all manner of fruit, all manner of salad, rice, beets, and chicken. With any luck, we were dining on that same chicken who woke me up on Saturday morning. There was a type of Tahitian luau with hula and fire baton twirling.

Bora Bora was by far the most beautiful of the islands we visited (in my opinion).
The water was phenomenal.....gorgeous shades of turquoise and blue, intensified by the sandy bottom.
Half way around the island, we stopped at a burial site where at one time humans were sacrificed.

    Transporation around the island
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't but a lot of other people rented these little vehicles. We opted for bicycles.....a cheap alternative, probably more comfortable, with the added benefit of burning calories. Don't think any of these little cars made it all the way around, at least we didn't see them.
