A day at the beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Included in the cruise was a day at the beach on a motu that was virtually uninhabited. There are literally thousands of little islands everywhere in French Polynesia. The cruise staff set up a barbecue and served drinks all day, some in coconuts found on the island. There was even a bar set up in the water..all inclusive. It was a great day for getting drunk, sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling or kayaking. By mid afternoon probably 99% of the passengers were drunk!

Shark & Ray Feeding - Bora Bora

    Shark feeding - Bora Bora

One of the most exhilarating & exciting excursions. The first stop was to an area where the guides feed the sharks. There were strong currents so we were instructed to hold on to a rope. People that were not strong swimmers had more of a tendency to panic. So there was a bit of a frenzy between the sharks approach and the panicky swimmers.
Our second stop was much calmer, to a shallow area to feed the stingrays. Most people were standing in chest high calm water. The rays are used to this, they approach very quickly out of nowhere.

    Overwater bungalows

Overwater bungalows are sort of symbolic of Tahiti and her islands. While snorkeling off the beach at Hotel Sofitel (Moorea) one of the guests invited me to see his rented bungalow. The views from the porch were awesome. Not that I'd stay in one for $500+ a night, but I can understand why they are so expensive. Inside was a glass coffeetable where you could view the fish swimming below.

    Tour of Tahiti
  • Tip Rating:
  • On our last day, a half day tour of Tahiti was included. Here is one of the picturesque churches we passed.

The island of Tahiti in general is not as attractive as the other surrounding islands. Most people fly into Tahiti but then fly or take the ferry the other islands.

    Paul Gauguin Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Good info on the painter's life story, however none of his major works of art are displayed here. There are original letters and a few prints. The museum shows the present location of his works throughout the world.

My favourite thing about Tahiti was the friendliness of the islanders.

It may seem trivial, but the two things that stand out as the fondest memouries of Tahiti are the moderate weather with constant ocean breezes and the variety of fruit that I hadn't seen before and haven't seen since.

    Bicycle Bora Bora
  • Tip Rating:
  • Decided to take the advise of a flight attendent that lives in Bora Bora, and rented bicycles for 4 hours. Rode around the perimeter of the island, some 16-20 miles and enjoyed beautiful, peaceful scenery. The road was pretty flat except for one hill. It was deserted for most of the route with the exception of a a few locals.

    Motu
  • Tip Rating:
  • A motu is a coral islet inside the lagoon, between the outer reef and a high island. The motus are always bordered by beautiful white sand beaches.

    Roads around the islands
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the Society Islands most of the roads that circle the islands are paved. Going around the island by car, scooter or bike is a pleasant way of exploring every aspect of it: people, landscape, fauna and flora.

    History
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1957 French Polynesia became an overseas territory of France. Internal self-government particularly in economic matters was increased in 1977 and again in 1984. In Mar. 1986 Gaston Flosse was reelected President of the Council of Ministers. In Feb. 1987 Flosse resigned after allegations of corruption and Jacques Teuira replaced him. In Oct. 1987 the breakup of a dock strike led to serious rioting in Papeete which resulted in the army restoring order. In Dec. 1987 Teuira resigned with discontent growing among the people regarding his policies and Alexandre Leontieff replaced Teuira as President.
