Visitor's bureau by Helga67 The best way to visit Papeete is to take a walking tour. Your first stop should be at the Tahiti Manava Visitor's Bureau. It's located on the waterfront side of Boulevard Pomare, at the corner of Rue Paul Gauguin. This building is also called Fare Manihini, which is the Tahitian word for "Visitor's House". The hosts and hostesses speak good English and will give you a map of the city and answer all your questions. Leave a Comment Address: Boulevard PomareDirections: Downtown Papeete

Place Vaiete by Helga67 Place Vaiete is an attractive modern square with benches, a waterfall, public toilets that are very clean and open all day. And there is even a security guard. From sunset to about 3 am you can have a cheap meal at one of the roulottes (mobile dining vans). Leave a Comment Address: Boulevard PomareDirections: Adjacent to the passenger shop dock

Public market by Helga67 The Marché Municipale (public market) is the heart of Papeete. It's a very colourful market that you should not miss on your tour around the city. Here you can find local fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, meat but also locally made products and souvenirs. Leave a Comment Address: Rue ColleteDirections: Downtown Papeete near Police station

Bougainville park by Helga67 The Bougainville park is a green oasis adjacent to the post office. There are a lot of trees providing shade during the warmest of the day and a stream is meandering through the park. During schooldays you will find a lot of youth here in the afternoon chatting on the many benches in the park and there is also a playground in the corner for parents with small kids Leave a Comment Directions: Between Boulevard Pomare and Rue du General de Gaulle

Bougainville park by Helga67 I suppose you can already guess whose monument is standing here at the entrance of the park. Yes, it's Bougainville's. Next to him stand two cannons. The one on the left side was taken from the Seeadler, a World War I German raider. The ship ran aground on Mopelia atoll, in the Leeward Society Islands in 1917, after having captured 14 British, French and American ships in the South Pacific. The other gun comes from the Zelee, a small French navy vessel that was sunk in Papeete harbour in 1914 when the German raiders Scharnhorst and Gneisenau bombarded Papeete. Place Tarahoi by Helga67 It was here that Queen Pomare IV lived in a beautiful mansion before the French took control in 1842, and used Tarahoi as their headquarters. Nowadays, you can find the French High Commissioner and the French Polynesian Assembly here. In front of the building is a monument to Pouvanaa a Oopa (1895-1977), a man from the island of Huahine who was a hero fighting for France during WWI. Later he was put in prisson in France because he was seeking independance for his own country. Leave a Comment Address: Rue du General de Gaulle

Town hall by Helga67 The town hall of Papeete is the most impressive building in the city. It's a replica of Queen Pomare's royal palace that once stood at Place Tarahoi. The elaborate building with crystal chandeliers and pink marble imported from Italy was inaugurated in 1990 Leave a Comment Address: Rue Paul GauguinDirections: Downtown Papeete

Bougainville by Helga67 Louis Antoine de Bougainville was a French explorer who was the first French discoverer of Tahiti. He anchored at Oputotara (east coast) in April 1768. He proclaimed French sovereignty over the island, which he named New Cyntherea. He never came to Papeete, though, but spent his entire brief visit to Tahiti on the east coast. Colorful Veggies at the Public Market by TemperatureWuss, 1 more photos The best place to go shopping for gifts, food and flowers is the Public Market in Papeete. It is just one block back from the main street that fronts the cruise ship dock. Go EARLY if you want fresh fish. An ice cold coconut is a refreshing treat while you stroll among the friendly vendors.

Harbour by Helga67 Across the Papeete harbour you will see container ships and inter-island cargo vessels docked at Motu Uta. The fast catamarans and ferries connect Papeete with the island of Moorea. Leave a Comment
