For those who love scuba diving, Raiatea is a great place to do so. I didn't had the chance to do it myself but here is some useful info for those who are interested.
50 different exciting dive spots are found in the four most beautiful passes of the Raiatea-Tahaa lagoon. These include exploring a sunken three-masted yacht, the hull of a Catalina seaplane, feeding gray sharks, barracuda, moray eels and the Napoleon fish that inhabit an underwater wall. The Octopus Grotto is a cave 120 meters (394 feet) long at a depth of 50 meters (55 feet): a dive for experienced divers only. There are also rainbow-hued jack trevally fish, caves of orange corals, black coral forests and dancing coral gardens of blues, violets and yellow.

A: if I remember HERTZ is downtown Uturoa all others are at airport so it's a good walk, but there are also taxi there, short ride by car.
