Take note that if you think you're coming to Raiatea for some fun in the sun and fun on the beach.......you're outta luck!
Raiatea has never been much of a conventional tourist draw due to the fact that there is an absence of beaches on the main island. Not knowing this beforehand, we drove around the island.........looking for the atypical "secluded Polynesian beach."
We drove......and drove......and drove. Never found a beach. We kept being re-directed to the outlying motus across the lagoon.
If there is a beach, usually they were off limits and signed off as "private."
We happened to stumble upon this little stretch of sand along our drive. It was part of the property of a hotel. It appeared to be a deserted hotel, so we took a chance and tried to look like guests!
(We were like Bonnie and Clyde dodging the hotel manager just to get some R & R on the beach!) ;-))

Tupas are big crabs that you find everywhere on the island and that have a real bad habit : to dig big holes in your garden... Really hard to hunt them without poison...
Des gros crabes que l'on peut trouver partout sur l'ile et qui ont une vraie mauvaise habitude : faire des trous dans votre jardin. Vraiment difficile a chasser sans poison...
