For years, there was a good little restaurant across the road from Club Bali Hai and its name was Ananas Bleu. It was just a tiny place with six tables with plastic chairs on the covered porch and another one inside, right next to the kitchen area. The family tended the restaurant, cooking, cleaning, serving... and resting by the palm tree for a smoke and chat with the locals when business was slow. It was a great place for simple but hearty breakfast and lunch, and it probably would be a great place for dinner too if they wouldn't insist on closing their doors at 2:30 every afternoon. After a fire destroyed the restaurant and their residence, the Hunter family moved the business to Club Bali Hai's property, serving the same simple but good food on the bayside spot where the old bar used to be. From this new location, you can enjoy your juicy burgers, wholesome sandwiches, omelettes, grilled fish, ice cream, fruit drinks, and crêpe Belle Hélène (our absolute favorite), while looking out to the most beautiful view on the island of Moorea. | | | | Le Bougainville: Come See Me Back Stage In Tahiti | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
If you have a healthy appetite and like buffets, you will like Le Bougainville, located on the premises of Hotel Sofitel Maeva Beach. The restaurant has a different buffet every evening on the weekend: BBQ on Friday evenings, seafood on Saturday evenings, and Polynesian on Sunday evenings. On Fridays and Saturdays, the Polynesian floorshow is during the dinner. If you would rather watch the show without gorging yourself on the endless array of food, you can observe from the lawn surrounding the open-air restaurant. We did that once, and we actually liked it better than watching the show from the inside. From the outside, you can stand next to the performers while the cast changes roles and costumes, preparing themselves for the next act. The photo ops from the outside are much more interesting than the postcard perfect floorshow. | | | | Le Sunset: Watching Sunset From Le Sunset In Moorea | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
One afternoon, we accidentally stumbled upon a little restaurant on the westernmost point of Moorea. We were dusty and sweaty after wandering around the island all morning. We walked through Hotel Hibiscus and found Césare Restaurant/Pizzeria. It looked very inviting in the shade under a huge fig tree, overlooking the lagoon and Club Med's beach. We had to wait for a while before the chef ambled in, and even another while before he had the kitchen set up and ready to go. The wait was well worth it. In between kissing his little sleeping baby and talking to a stream of friends and relatives, the young chef nonchalantly whipped out some of the tastiest dishes we have eaten on the island. The shrimp in the cocktail were huge and fresh, the seafood pasta was delectable, the pizza came out of the wood-fire oven simply perfect, and the homemade fruit ice cream fully recharged our energy. Césare's name has been changed to Le Sunset since the first time we "discovered" it, but chef Philippe still reigns over his domain, the sandy beach is still white, the sunset is still a beautiful sight, and the food still charms the locals and tourists alike. | | | | Snack Moorea: In Tahiti: May I have some coconut and olives? | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Charles thought I was strange when I told him I "really, really, really" like this snack bar. "There is nothing special about it", he said, "There are much better bars everywhere on all islands." True, there are. But still, I like this bar a lot because they give me free stuff. No, they didn't me big stuff, valuable stuff, or even souvenir stuff. What they gave me were olives and the soft meat of the coconut. Free, even after my drinks were gone and I did not order anymore. I have always been a sucker for soft coconut meat and olives, and even more so when I drink. When someone gives me what seems like an endless supply of the stuff, they are guaranteed to win me over right there and then. It's true that the people at the bar make pretty good grilled meat and fish, good sandwiches, and so-so burgers. I like them for the coconut meat and olives, though. That's it. That is the only reason I recommend this place. It is very biased and groundless, I know! | | | | good resterants | Tip Rating: | | | | |
While in papeete we never actually went to any proper resarants !instead we went to the caravans that park every night along the quayside near wgere the ships dock ,sometimes maybe 15 caravans in all !they have the best food ! back here in england i wouldnt think of eating from a caravan but in tahiti its the best ! chez mami is the best for chinese and is the one that stays up late (if you fancy chinese for breakfast after leaving a nightclub at 6 in the morning) but if you want crepes, pizza, steak, burgers or french food this is the place to go, a set up of childrens plastic chairs and table is the norm, and you can bring your own alcohol ! great for watching the people go by ,and a good sign is that the locals dine there in droves ! Raitea -on the quayside again one french restarant and one chinese _excellent food and cocktails but a bit pricey ! Bora Bora -wel you ve got bloody marys but i think that can sometimes be a little to touristy ,and overpriced for what it is ! but you have to go there cos its famous ! the best lace we went to is a little secret called Kaina hut,its not opened at lunch time but in the evening its fantastic !similar to bloody marys with the sand on the floor ! but much nicer and quieter !the decor is very nice with cargo nets and oyster shels dangling everywhere, even the menus and plates are great ! its by far the best food and service here, but again a little pricey (but everything is here !) and then pirates bar is a fab little place, nice food and freindly french guys working there ! and you can sit and eat outside on a terrace and watch as the manta rays !they are not kept there but they are drawn to a spot there ,and they are amazing ,sooo big and gracefull, you could watch them all night ! If you don't want to spend too much money on food, try out "Les roulottes". These are mobile diners usually found near the main road, where you can order a good and cheap meal (depending on what that roulotte is selling).
