Tahiti
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tahiti is the island most people know. It is where you will land when arriving to French Polynesia. This is the island where most of the Polynesians live and work, within 15 miles of the capital city of Papeete.

Don't imagine yourself lying on a sandy white beach, because most beaches are of a volcanic black sand beach. Touring the island, you will notice that the interior is for the most part inaccessible except by four wheel drive vehicles or on foot. The valleys have picturesque rivers with some great waterfalls and you can visit the botanical garden and Gauguin museum or learn more about polynesian life in the Musee de Tahiti et des Iles. Papeete, the capital city, is a bustling place with good restaurants, nightlife and shops.

This is the perfect island for starting or ending your trip to the more romantic and exotic islands of French Polynesia, but don't stay too long.

Explore the island through my Tahiti Page.

    Bora Bora
  • Tip Rating:
  • The usual superlatives are almost inadequate to describe the many beautiful faces of Bora Bora ... the beautiful colors of the lagoon and the wonderful views of the mountains.

This is, in my opinion, the most romantic, most exotic island on Earth. The ideal spot for honeymooners. The island is well known and visited, especially by Americans and Japanese. It has some stunning hotels with wonderful overwater bungalows but very pricey too. If you have the chance and money to go to French Polynesia, don't miss this island because you will regret it for the rest of your life!

On my Bora Bora Page you can find more info and pics.

IF YOU GET TO BORA BORA YOU...
  • Tip Rating:
  • IF YOU GET TO BORA BORA YOU MUST GO DIVING WITH THE MANTA RAYS, THEY ARE HUGE AND SWIM RIGHT UP TO YOU.
WHEN IN PAPEETE GO AND BUY A BLACK PEARL, YOU CAN GET A REAL BARGAIN IF YOU BUY A SLIGHTLY TAINTED ONE, THEY ARE A LOT CHEAPER AND YOU CAN HARDLY NOTICE THE SLIGHT FLAWS.

    Cultural Museum and aquarium
  • Tip Rating:
  • We had to be back at the hotel by 2.00 to meet up with Lionel, our guide who personally drove us to the Tahitian Cultural Museum (boring as it contained a whole bunch of tikis). Next, we went to an aquarium under a lagoon where you can see a Great White shark. Finally, he took us around the whole of Papeete (much of which we had seen that morning).

    Shark Diving in Moorea
  • Tip Rating:
  • I highly recommend a shark dive if you are a certified scuba diver. You will see black tipped reef sharks and lemon sharks. The dive masters hand feed the sharks for about ten minutes. During the feeding, sharks are swimming all around you. The divers are instructed to stay motionless on the ocean floor. This dive is a big adrenalin rush!

Check out my Shark Dive in Moorea travelogue for more shark dive photographs.

    Relax in Rangiroa
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rangiroa is a fantastic remote island. It's the second largest atoll in the world. Unlike some of the other islands, Rangiroa is completely flat. The inner lagoon is more like a sea. You can't see to the other side of the atoll. We spent three days at the
Kia Ora Village. There isn't much to do here besides relaxing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. We
enjoyed some of the best sunsets that we have ever seen during this stay. Rangiroa also has some of the best scuba diving in French Polynesia. I saw two
dolphins, a sea turtle, a marlin, and a spotted ray on my dive.
Check out my Rangiroa travelogue for photographs.

Island Tour by Boat on Moorea
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a great way to see the island of Moorea. You'll see dolphins (if you're lucky) and stop at a motu (island) for snorkeling, ray feeding, and lunch. There are several different tour organizers on the island. We arranged ours through the activity center at the Sheraton Moorea. Check out my
    Moorea travelogue for photos.

Rent a car or a scooter on...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rent a car or a scooter on Bora Bora
There is only one main road around the island, so it's very hard to get lost! This is a great way to see the island. We circled the island in about 3 hours, with plenty of stops along the way to eat, shop, and take pictures.

    Marae
  • Tip Rating:
  • All the islands have some marae. A marae is a traditional Polynesian temple of coral or basaltic stone, usually built with an altar at one end.

The marae was a place of pilgrimage, ritual and dance for the Maohi people.
