The Raiatea Crisis or: Disembarkation and Health

by Kakapo2

-The worst hours on board were not the two rough nights which made us fear of racing straight into hell. The worst time were the hours when we were not allowed to leave the ship in Raiatea because of the swine flu scare.Although there were more than 200 people on board affected by the norovirus, the only reason for not letting us off the ship were the very few cases of people ill with flu – not even swine flu – symptoms. There were negotiations in Papeete (Tahiti) – and it was clear: If they would not let us off here, the other three French Polynesian islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea) would be off the itinerary, too. And they were the reason why we had booked this cruise at all.We could see Bora Bora at the horizon, and this beautiful Gare Maritime at the foot of the ship, Raiatea’s sparkling harbour buildings and beautifully paved harbour promenade, the waiting tour operators, car...

Health on Board

by Kakapo2

-It is irresponsible and unacceptable that sick people board a cruise ship, as there is nearly no chance of escaping them. This is how the norovirus that made life on board so difficult got onto the ship. The bad manners of many people made it spread so quickly and struck down more than 200 people. Some people touch everything on buffets and put it back, so other people get in contact with it. And so it goes on.The shaky nature of travelling on a ship forces people to hold on to handrails, and they touch buttons in elevators, in the casino, on coffee machines, serving spoons at buffets, etc. etc. And some people do not understand anything. Even after the introduction of the strict health procedures, there were people who handed their cups and mugs to staff, and they took and touched it, only to touch other cups they handed to other passengers. They pressed the nozzles of the hand...

Seasons in the Sun

by Kakapo2

-There were never enough deckchairs to lie in the sun – apart from one day between Vava’u and Rarotonga when we had rain, and in the pouring rain of Suva, as well on the last day in the cool air, getting closer to New Zealand ;-) No, really, not even when the rain had stopped in the late afternoon did the people want to relax on the deckchairs, as it was not warm enough to roast and grill your skin. We could choose from about 200 deckchairs or more. (I did not bother to count…) On piping hot days you could not get a deckchair in the shade, and I for my part needed a shower after an hour in the sun, and it was good that I sweated that much and had enough, because any minute longer, and I would have been sunburnt despite having applied sunscreen lotion. The solution of the deckchair crisis was to pay AU$ 10 for a half or AU$ 15 for a full day at the Oasis Lounge. This did not only guarantee...

Onboard Entertainment, Shops and Spa

by Kakapo2

-There is more on offer than you can ever do. It started with a welcome party that began long before the ship left port in Auckland. Live music, raffles, and making a conga-line for warming up the people. (We fled to a safe watching distance LOL) If you want to make the monkey, this is the right place for you. I was most impressed with a guy who took about one second to jump into the pool with all his clothes and shoes on after the showmaster promised a bottle of best champagne to the first person to jump into the pool…The two evening shows with vocalists, dancers, comedians and cirque performers were always a big hit with the crowds. We quite enjoyed the presentations of the destinations the day before going ashore, with the focus on history but also some glimpses into geology and local encounters. There were people who went to the bingo every day, or to bridge courses, table tennis and...

Fun with Dick and Jane

by Kakapo2

-One of those two names is invented, as one of the two people involved never addressed the other one by his name. At least not while we were forced to listen to their dialogues that often evolved into fierce arguments. As we thoroughly enjoyed those disagreements – although I must admit that it could be annoying when they woke us up at 5.30am, or after returning from the casino at 1.30am – I named them Dick and Jane, referring to the film with Jim Carrey and who cares whom.Dick and Jane were retirees. He was a big man and had a sombre calming voice. She was a short woman and talked like a mad parrot. She made her shortness and lack of glamour up with aggressive behaviour. The funny thing about this is that obviously she was the bad one of the two, and although she once had had an affair with a Maori man in Rotorua she terrorised Dick with her jealousy. This is difficult to imagine, as...

Who has made the worst Cruise Experience?

by Kakapo2

-You have such and such cruise experts on board who share their cruise experience with novices like us and with other similarly knowledgable passengers. Two such guys, not only rich in cruising experience but also in years of age, shared our breakfast table on one of the first days at sea. More exactly: Only one of them sat at our table until the second one joined him.Grumpy Old Man I was not easy to impress. I pointed out an extraordinary sunrise – the sun broke through thick cloud and disappeard two minutes later behind the clouds, like a burning and fading flare - he could not see from his seat. He grumbled: “Oh yeah.” I wanted to be nice and share my early morning excitement, saying he would only need to stand up and make one step back to see the celestial wonder, as a pillar blocked his view. He munched on his toast while I ran outside to take a photo.Shortly afterwards Grumpy II...

The Small-Office Coffee Machines

by Kakapo2

-Let me tell you of the biggest daily mayhem. That clearly was the coffee and tea counter. There were two such areas, and each of them was fitted with two small-office Nescafé coffee machines that soon gave up the ghost. The longer the cruise, the more frequently we had no coffee at all with our breakfasts because this would have taken another 20 minutes of queueing, and sometimes forever. When I decided to queue in a relatively short coffee queue - this could still take forever because they turned the coffee machines off and on again after every cup of coffee or water they got out of them after a lot of praying… - I always asked for several coffees and teas, as refills would have taken even longer queueing.Although breakfast was nice in the serviced restaurants, it was difficult to get enough liquid. There was a time window for serving juice (in the tiniest glasses you have ever seen)...

The Masters of Non-Information

by Kakapo2

- Not only did we not get informed until the last minute that we would not land in Nuku’alofa, and only from the papers on the ship that we we would not land in Niuafo’ou at all. We were also kept in the dark about suspected swine flu cases and a norovirus epidemic on board until it could no longer be covered up. In fact, it started with masked cleaning staff sneaking in and out of cabins, more and more people getting their meals served to the cabin by masked staff, and rumours of people being isolated and quarantined and whatever. Suddenly there was no more self service in the buffet restaurant. Before receiving a tray you got a portion of sanitizer pumped into your hands (which is obviously normal on other ships but was not on this one until the epidemic was in full swing), and staff had to serve you everything from behind the counters. In the restaurants with service the salt and...

Ignorance or Impertinence: P&O Fooling Passengers

by Kakapo2

-Although P&O assure you in any moment of the day and night, and in their printed statements as well, of their commitment to best customer service, they have been fooling their passengers with blatantly misleading information about the itinerary. I am sure this did not happen on our cruise only, so this seems to be the company’s policy. They escape responsibility by writing in their terms and conditions that they can change the itinerary without further notice, and you do not give it a lot of thought as you think of bad weather, high sea, and technical problems. But they do lie from the beginning, and this is what made me really angry. We missed out on two of the published eleven stops I had really been looking forward to and had planned plenty of activities. Already the first port of call (Nuku’alofa) was taken from the itinerary because nobody had told the travel experts from P&O that a...

The Cabin Stewards

by Kakapo2

-These Guys are just for You…… and a Hundred other PeopleThe Cabin Stewards are an incredibly friendly bunch of people, always with a smile on their faces and some nice words on their lips. Every section of a corridor has its own steward and assistant steward. They make up your room, bring you a replacement hairdryer if the one mounted to the wall does not work, just look after everything regarding your accommodation.I talked to our steward who was from Indonesia. He works eleven hours a day, seven days a week, eight months without a single day off, hopping from one cruise to the next – and still keeps on smiling all way through. He would be allowed a couple of hours off for getting off the ship while in port, but he said this is not enough, so he prefers to stay on board. I wondered if he ever seens the sun. He said: “Yes. Through the windows of the outside cabins.”
