What to Do in Australia???

by Freebeacher

Sydney and its harbor merit several days. The vast majority of overseas arrivals fly into Sydney, though it is certainly not the only international gateway. Make sure you have a window seat when you fly in. Go up to Centrepoint, the highest tower, and then take a couple of rides on the cross harbor ferries. Check out The Rocks, the historic area. Other than that, follow your own interests. Don't feel you have to spend money and time to fly to the center of Australia to see Uluru (Ayer's Rock) if you really aren't interested in seeing a red rock (although it IS a very big red rock!) I met very few travelers who ever made it to Canberra, the national capital. In Australia there are cities and nightlife, a very sophisticated beach culture, skiing (Yes, skiing, if you can belive it! ), arts and crafts, museums, team sports-everthing. I personally like spending lots of time on beaches, so...

A little Australian history...

by Gwynneth

A little history and a few facts on Australia. Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere (that is the bottom half of the world). This is why it is sometimes called the Land Down Under. Australians came here from all over the world. Aborigines first arrived about 60,000 years ago.Europeans arrived only 227 years ago.Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent. 18.6 million people live here. There are 6 states and 2 territories in Australia- Queensland Capital City... Brisbane- New South Wales Capital City... Sydney- South Australia Capital City... Adelaide- Tasmania Capital City...Hobart- Victoria Capital City... Melbourne- Western Australia Capital City... Perth- Northern Territory Capital City... Darwin- Australian Capital Territory Capital City... Canberra

Hug a cuddly gum tree

by unravelau

Hug a gum tree by unravelau Favorite Thing:Another important activity for Australia and its well being would be the daily tree hugging. Gum trees are native to Australia and one species makes the food for our Koala population. All trees purify our air so its a good idea to give a tree a hug a day............ Fondest Memory:I do miss my tree hugging but try to do that wherever I am.

Youth Hostel Card

by Piggy73

Join in your home country or purchase a year membership in Australia. You don't need to be a "spring-chicken" to join and it will save you a lot of money on the discounts you get - car hire, train & bus tickets etc.Although the official youth hostels can be a bit more expensive - security & cleanliness are to a high standards which is useful in a major city such as Sydney.

Lower rates for Hotels

by corey07

One general tip I got from a receptionist in a hotel: when you're going by car and search for Hotels along the way just go to an internet café and check 'wotif.com' ......... the hotels advertise their free rooms of the next days for extreme lower rates than usual..... we had a great stay for one night in Sydney's Vibe Hotel ......... very trendy, very luxurious and VERY too expensive for us normally ......... Leaving Sydney Airport Building after a flight of 22 hours i get fresh energy at once just by breathing Australian air again ..........it feels like coming home finally ..... therefore what I miss most when I am away is: AUSTRALIA

by Alphons

On my way in Australia I go to Alice Springs in the red center of Australia. Here I diside to make a trip to Kings Canyon-Ayers Rock and the Olga's. I go to the travel shop in the city near the shopping center. The owner is a very friendly Dutch Woman, she takes all the time for you to help you and her friendly staff too. There are there a lot of internet computers too.

Road Trains

by Kate-Me

Road Trains are another really common sight in the outback...just hope you're not stuck driving in the cloud of dust behind one! They're extremely long - as many as 2 - 3 times the normal size of a semi trailer.

Tip Photo
Termite Mounds

by Kate-Me

These structures are actually termite ant mounds! They're a rather common sight in the outback and in some instances they can be as tall as a bus. Why? Because of the wet season floods. When the Wet Season comes, the ants move higher to escape the water. Interestingly, these termite mounds are also magnetic, pointing north. It's scientifically proven but they don't know why. They've done experiments on the mounds, even trying to turn them around, but the ants just keep pointing north.

Frill Necked Lizard

by Kate-Me

Here is another desert animal you can hope to find in the Outback, Australia's famous frill necked lizard. I particularly love the reptiles (excluding snakes!) in the Australian outback. Often you can see lizards sunning themselves by the side of the roads.

Tip Photo
Ettamogah Pub

by Kate-Me

I don't know how the Ettamogah pub idea began, but there is one of them in Queensland and another in Albury, Victoria. The main idea seems to be for them to be pubs so Aussie that they're more than Aussie and larger than life, combining all the aspects of outback pubs - funny and rude jokes on noticeboards and walls, memorabilia, - and more, including souvenirs, plenty of beer (of course) and even the floor is on a slight lean to make you feel drunk before you are. Outside there's more of the same - funny signs and weird things to see.
