guam is HORRIBLE place!

by js08

To say that guam is a horrible place is actually quite an understatement. ALL of the negative reviews about guam that I've read so far are spot on - this coming from someone who has lived there for over 18 years. This godforsaken pile of dirt is full of ignorant, cocky, highly uneducated, and barbaric animals that call themselves chamorros and filipinos. Everything on guam is corrupt, starting with the government. Listed below are some warnings about guam in no particular order:- Keep in mind that this place is called the "island of thieves."- The locals think they're immortal and will try to fight you for ANY reason. Everyone here thinks they're a mixed-martial artist or has some affiliation to one.- The place is full of highly uneducated animals, which was clearly evidenced by the review from badapple. What a major douchebag this guy is. U R such a tool, go get edumacated U dumba$$.-...

United States' backyard is a THIRD WORLD HOLE!

by islandhunter

Nothing. The fact that the island has been in decline in every possible way since the early 1980s thanks to a hand full of "backwards" thinking corrupt politicians - married with today's scumbag politicians who are elected by large families. Guam has sunk to an all time low. Gone are the days of the throngs of US-Soldier/Sailor supporting families. They have been replaced by "champagne taste - beer budgeting welfare panhandlers". There are many locals who have left the island because of the constant if not blatant lack of accountability and trust that people should have for their government. Guam's "local government" is based entirely on the US model of a democratic republic. Unfortunately, none of it works the way it should because 1.) The government is corrupt right from go. - it is entirely based upon who you know versus what you know, 2.) The politicians who are in office make sure...

don't try the "betel nut"

by davecallahan

Chewing of "Betel nut" for the locals is akin to having a capuccino or heavy latte for us tourists. The nuts themselves (which are really of the areca plant that grow with the betel plant) are about the size of jaw breaker candy but are soft and chewy like old bubble gum. Other than the red stain to lips and tongue and teeth, there is no permanent ill-effect from chewing the nut nor is there any addiction effects. It is just a cultural habit that goes back to prehistoric times in the southeast asia area. But it is not a flavor that most Europeans or Americans will enjoy; it is very alkaline. The betel leaf on the other hand has a slightly peppery taste and is used as a condiment in some local dishes. Some natives even chew a leaf in with the nut to enhance the taste. The betel leaves are also used as an astringent and an antiseptic and for headaches; like using witch hazel and...

Inarajan Pools

by pangelipc

Inarajan Pool is a natural made pool. that has eroded due to the ocean. I remember when I was little how large I thought it was and how deep and blue the water was, but everytime I go back it seems to keep shrinking and shrinking. I miss all my family and friends who have visited us here and are now living elsewhere. I miss them and wish they would come and visit more often. Then we can reminise about the way things were.

go skinnydipping in the middle...

by thechels

EVERYTHING!!!What don't I like? One of my favorite "fun" things is being sneaky and going skinnydipping in the middle of the night. There are plenty of 'secluded' beachy type places. the water is warm all year round all day and all night! It's perfect! The friends and memories I made, and still enjoy in my head! I love the ocean. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and playing volleyball in the sand by the beach!

Cameras & Designer Boutiques

by bibas

[Q] we've all seen Japanese tourists flock to designer boutiques in Europe and taking pictures all around the world . now here in the tropical paradise of Guam : WHY can't U just lay down on the beach ??? [A] in Japan U live within your boundaries & stature . thus, going abroad is one of the most fantastic get-aways one can imagine . don't take our spending spree as if we are filthy rich . on the contrary, much of our lives are modest by American standards, and most of our income is set accordingly . we buy designer brands because we consider them post-modern Art . we carry our camera wherever we go because it WAS the machine that brought us worldly status along w/ the radio (and compact cars & walkmans after that). yes, we would like to lie on the beach forever, but our vacation time is limited, and would rather take this chance to buy whatever we can't on mainland Japan 8)[Q] hmm .....

[Q] 'S' as in Shopping ??? hey, I thought this was an island in the middle of nowhere where we can lie on the beach and do NOTHING !!![A] correct . it was so for a while after WW-II . but now it's more of a Duty-Free Island in itself, with the Koreans & Japanese flying in herds for its proximity .[Q] O.K, but why do U always travel in herds ???[A] the way these travel agents operate : one can save almost 50% if traveling with a tour group . and remember : the language & culture differ widely from many other Asian countries, and more so from the States & Europe . travelling as a pack we get a guide who explains and takes care of virtually EVERYTHING .[Q] the Japanese ??? I thought we took it over from them after a bloody battle ..[A] correct again . the economy was much dependent on the US Military presence after that, but while they began to reduce presence after the cold war, the...

Don't stay too long!

by mesoblonda

Stopped in Guam on the way to Bali. Great place to visit for two, three days max. It's small and there isn't much to see. A nice stopover if you're not ready to rough it. Nice beaches, nice place to slow down and RELAX!

Soak it up......

by Trina2383

Soak in all the beautiful scenery you can! The people are great and the food is good, but I think my fondest memory will be the scenery...being able to look out at the ocean, palm trees and feeling the ocean breeze almost every where I go, gives me the sense of freedom.
