Visit Chamorro Village, at least once, while on-island. Yes, it's like a huge commercial flea market of sorts, open air stands mixed in with tourist-y shops. There are sit-down restaurants or family-run food stands. Tables are covered with local cuisine and local arts & crafts, as well as items you can buy at the Kmart down the street. Live local music is also heard here. Oh, there is also a carabao (water buffalo) that you can ride around the Village (photo, too)...all for a small fee (of course!)
Be prepared to spend some significant change. You may be on Guam, but it's still America!
Chamorro Village is over 20 years old...when I left the island in 1981, the shops weren't there and the central focus was the huge covered stage where my dance group performed during fiesta. The food is great...don't be afraid to try the chicken kelaguen, especially if you like hot and spicy food. (Red rice is the traditional staple with kelaguen.) If you prefer non-Chamorro fare, there is a Caribbean Jerk restaurant, too. Leave a Comment
Directions: Downtown Hagatna (formerly called Agana...it's still Agana on most world maps, but the locals have voted to go back to the ancient spelling), right along Marine Drive. Look for the baseball stadium behind it.
