Go Golfing

by pangelipc

We have many golf courses -- many are 18 holes or more. A & B paths etc. I'm not a golfer, but I used to volunteer at many golf fundraisers that are held here. I overhear them say they were tops since they were designed by Arnold Palmer (etc). Many also have ocean views or holes that use natural terrain.

Going around the Island

by pangelipc

You won't believe this --- but you can drive around the island in about 1 hour. But most parts you won't be able to drive through unless you have a military sticker (since you have to get on base). We go every time someone comes to visit, since it gives us something to do and to see how the island has changed.

Hiking, or what the locals call boonie stomping

by Travel2write

One of my favorite activities on Guam is hiking, or what the locals call boonie stomping. Guam has a number of great hikes, whether the destination is a secluded beach miles from the nearest road or a pristine waterfall cascading down from the mountainous interior of the island.Sella Bay - Sella was the site of a Chamorro village until the 1800's when it was displaced by the Spanish. Sella Bay is well known for its masonry brick oven and Spanish era cut stone bridge over the Sella River, close to the shoreline. Sella Bay is a fascinating place to explore, and it makes for a nice weekend camping trip as well. The trail down from Route 4 is not terribly difficult, though the climb up to the highway can be difficult in the heat of the day. Though it is possible to snorkel here, it is usually too silty from the two rivers that flow into Sella Bay to make it worthwhile.

The first Catholic Church on Guam

by Travel2write

To me, it was a church, however the tourists were there. and there is some historical relevence. The first Catholic Church on Guam, the Dulce Nombre de Maria {Sweet Name of Mary} Cathedral Basilica was constructed in central Agana in 1669. The original church was constructed in 1669-1670 by Chamorros under the direction pf Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores, on lands granted by Chief Kepuha, the ranking male of Agana at that time. This structure survived until World War II when it was destroyed during the shelling of Agana in preparation for the American invasion. The present church, pictured here, was constructed on the original site in 1955-1959.

Plaza De Espana

by Travel2write

Once the seat of government for the Spanish, American and Japanese administrations, Plaza de España is probably the most visited historic site on the island. I walked around the Plaza, or what used to be. The Plaza offers visitors an opportunity to picnic and learn much about the island's colonial past at the same time. Signs tell tourists mostly about the Spanish-era in Japanese and English, and you have the opportunity to see some of the renovated structures, such as the Chocolate House. With its thick manposteria walls, which were made from coral and limestone mortar, many of the original buildings would probably still be around today if it wasn't for the heavy bombardment by American forces in the 1944 recapture of the island.

Learn to Scuba Dive

by looseelectron

Beautiful diving on GUAM, one of the top ten places in the world for diving. BONUS, if you are into WWI, WWII history, you won't be disappointed, from War in the Pacific National Parks, to under water artifacts, i.e. ships, planes, track vehicles.

Best elevator view at Hotel Nikko

by mskwan

On the top floor of Hotel Nikko, there is an expensive Chinese restaurant with superb view of the Tumon Bay. If you don't want to spend the money but still want to enjoy the view - ride the elevator! Not every elevator in the hotel has this kind of view, just the one leading to the restaurant. Most of the time the restaurant is closed except for dinnertime or weekend lunchtime, so enjoy the elevator ride.

The Pier at Merizo

by mskwan

All the way down south is the village of Merizo. Most tourists goes to the pier to catch a boat to Cocos Island. However, there are plenty of picnic spots nearby the pier. If you come here early enough, say before 7 am, when the ocean is calm and clear like glass, you can see all kinds of sea creatures just from standing at the pier. It's like snorkeling without getting wet.
