The hotel row in Tumon is so close to the shopping centers that most tourists find walking around to be a more convenient (not to mention healthier as well as fun) mode of transportation. In general, Guam is a fairly safe place to walk around, even at night. You will see locals and tourists mingling and enjoying themselves at any of the local hangouts. Also, because Guam's economy is very much tourist-based and receives a majority of its tourists from Japan (I believe it's safe to say), you will find that most businesses hire staff who speak Japanese rather fluently (if not completely fluent). Konichiwa! (Not that I speak it at all...lol!)
