Green Bananas and Taro on the Umu - Samoa by Groverdean, 2 more photos The Umu is an stone/earth oven which is prepared for cooking meals. In Samoa they often utilise the volcanic rocks as the base of the oven then burn coconut husks which make excellent charcoal. Then the various foods are placd on top such as fish, pork, chicken, with green bananas, taro, breadfruit, and traditionally on Sundays "Palusami" (pictured). (Palusami is a combination of coconut cream, onions, young taro leaves.) Large Banana leaves are then placed over the Umu to keep the heat in. Wait 1/2 - 1 hour and then your meal is cooked! Leota playing guitar on Manono Island -Samoa by Groverdean, 2 more photos Defintely a highlight of any trip to Samoa is the awesome nature of the People. Samoans have a laidback way of approaching everything, so don't expect things to happen in a hurry, but they will get done. The people are always helpful and very honest, although sometimes they may be too polite and may have misunderstood what you have said, as there is a slight language barrier at times. Samoa is also an incredibly safe destination. As many people live in Fales which are open buildings, if someone is to steal something sizeable they can't get too far when you live on an island. The population of Samoa is about 180,000. There are 200,000 Samoans living in New Zealand and 60,000 living in Australia! Leave a Comment

Typical Island Scenery In Samoa by Groverdean Samoa is made up of 7 islands. The islands of Upolu and Savai'i make up the overwhelming majority of the land mass. Most of the population lives on Upolu which is where the capital city of Apia is located. Savai'i is the largest island in Polynesia outside of Hawai'i (the island that is). The interior areas of these islands is untouched with a single road traversing the interior of Upolu. Leave a Comment

Fiafia nights are normally put on by the larger accommodation options in Samoa and everyone is welcome to attend (at a fee). The one I witnessed was while staying at Tanu's Beach Fales in Manase of Savai'i. All the participants dress up in local costume, and they accept money or other donations while dancing. They are such good fun with lots of upbeat dancing, singing, and activity going on that you'll probably wish they'd go on for quite a few more hours! Leave a Comment

Sea Arches on Savai'i - Samoa by Groverdean Safua Tours is operated out of the Safua Hotel on Savai'i. The tours are run by a retired Australia Geologist, Warren Jopling, who has lived on the island for well over 20 years. He has an incredible knowledge of everything to do with the island and for some you may find it overkill. For others you will find it exceptionally good value and a great education. Well I now know how those sea arches (pictured) are formed! Cost of the tour depends on how many want to go, what you want to see. He pours the majority of the money he earns back into the community on Savai'i. He will also take you to the Pulemei Step Pyramid which many tours won't. Phone number is 51271. Leave a Comment

A great time to visit Samoa is when the Teuila Festival is on. The festival occurs in September each year for a week, check the site (http://www.teuilafestival.ws/) for more information. Teuila is the national flower of Samoa and the festival is annual celebration of all things Samoan. Most of the festivities are centred around Apia, in particular around the government building. If you want to witness tattooing the traditional way or basket weaving, like to feast on some Samoan BBQ, or just hang out and listen to some of Samoa's finest singers and dancers in the evening, there are many more activities to enjoy. There is also a spectacular outrigger canoe race on the harbour and the culmination of the week's celebration is the crowning of the new Miss Samoa! Leave a Comment

Kirikiti by the roadside - Samoa by Groverdean The Samoan version of cricket is quite different than the modern day version that many witness on TV. The bat for starters is fashioned more like a club. There's a lot of clapping and dancing going on, it seems as if the whole village participates in a game, and everyone has a great time! The Kirikiti season is from June to September and as you drive through every village in the late evening you will see a game being played. Leave a Comment

Falefa Falls by FelixB Waterfalls are one of Samoa's biggest natural gift. They differ so greatly and yet is everyone astonishingly beautiful! One of the most beautiful is probably Falefa Falls. It is close to the villiage of Lalomauga, shortly after Matautu Point, when coming from Apia. In cause you can't find it, simply ask a friendly local. They'll know where it is and might show you it.
The main road passes the waterfall, but it's almost impossible to get a good picture from that side. So you have to cross the river: For that there's a wooden bridge. Me and my friends drove over it with a car and we managed it, otherwise I couldn't write about it right now. Well, the bridge didn't look like it was that stable and safe. So everyone was like, "Hmm, will we make it". But we made it and there is no problem with the bridge. (Don't bother following the road after the bridge as it is a dead end. The road is long, narrow and there are a lots of serpentines. Every now and then pigs, hens, dogs and even people appear in front of you or are blocking the way. In the end you'll find yourself in a remote village.) Leave a Comment

The Pretty Teuila Flower - Samoa by Groverdean The national flower of Samoa is called Teuila (pronounced Te-wheel-a). It is also called Red Ginger. Strangely enough the Teuila Flower is not native to the Samoan islands and was introduced from Hawai'i. You will see the flower growing everywhere. Leave a Comment

by Teuila Stroll along the seawall, day or night! Located in Upolu the main road of Apia you can walk\jog or just sit there, you meet so many people doing the same thing, great place to meet other people or simply sit and watch cars drive up and down Beach Rd.
Being among the most friendly people in the world, swimming at white sand clear water beaches, hiking up Mt Vaea to visit Robert Louis Stevenson and get a spectacular view of the island. Leave a Comment
