What to bring along to Samoa

by FelixB

If you are going to stay in a hotel a hard-top case is probably ok if not best. But if you are on the road or staying at fales a waterproof backpack would be best. Fales don't have walls or doors so something like a lock would be reasonable to bring along as well. Samoa is hot n humdid all year round so short sleeved clothes are most suitable. For dinner in a better hotel long trousers would be good. When you're walking through the bush sneakers or the like a good enough. Due to mosquitos wearing long sleeved clothes on other occasions is also good ;-) Insect repellent is a must. Also the usual stuff you would bring along like aspirin. Sunblock: The ozon layer around Samoa is compared to the Northern hemisphere thin, but not as thin as in Australia/New Zealand. So you should have a sunblock with a factor of around 20. You can buy films there but don't be too picky as they won't have...

Packing List

Bring a small backpack to use when traveling around the islands. You don't need to bring much, a towel, knelong shorts/skirt, t-shirt and sandals will do. And perhaps an umbrella. Bring something white to wear, if you want to blend in with the locals at churchtime on sundays. You'll probably get what you need at a nice price in the markets in Apia. Sunscreen, antiseptic ointment, painkillers, syringe with needle (the doctor might use reusables) and insect repellent. Film is probably cheaper other places and don't forget to bring a disposable underwater camera if you're going to do some snorkeling. A towel, your favourite swimwear and snorkeling gear. Swiss army-knife, a torchlight and The Lonely Planet Samoa guide book.

backpack - there is no need for a large suitcase. Packing casual clothing and comfortable shoes or sandles come in handy as the temperature can be as high as 32 degrees celcius. If you're wanting to attend church - pack something white to wear.Photo: children attending white sunday mass

Make sure you have a backpack\small bag to put light things in while travelling around Samoa for your little things, walking around in the heat can be a journey on its own, so take a small bag for when touring for your little necessities Comfortable summer shoes\sandals\flipflops. You may also want to take a pair of running or walking shoes. Because of the hot climate take sunscreen, sunblock, insect repellent Packing to go to Samoa, is basically like packing to go to the beach for an extended stay, light clothing, hat, shoes, you might want a sun umbrella. Just remember to cover up from the Sun also as it gets quite hot!
