Coffee Bean Cafe, Apia.: Smell the coffee!

The Coffee Bean Cafe has a terrible location. They really deserve to have their cafe on the Apia waterfront, rather than being tucked away down a driveway about two doors down Falealiali Street (connecting with The Cross Island Road). This place is really, REALLY worth hunting down if you're in Apia and need a coffee fix. The staff are great (where aren't they great in Samoa?) and the coffee literally greets you at the door (the aroma that is). There's a nice range of food here too, including breakfasts. If you're staying at Aggie Grey's in Apia, this cafe is only a three minute walk away, but if you're up the other end of town, a WST$3 taxi ride will get you there if you don't have your own wheels or it's too much effort to stroll over. I stopped here for a decent latte the day I drove back from a day trip to Vailima and Virgin Cove. I also stopped here later in my stay, after...

Owned and operated by a resident Roman, who has the benefit of a cook who has mastered some of her recipes, this chic little bar and restaurant in central Apia makes a fine addition to the city's culinary crop. I enjoyed a delicious fresh piece of Yellow-fin Tuna steak with a top-notch Italian sauce here on my last night in Samoa. I went back for breakfast the next day and the opportunity to try the coffee. For the European palette, the coffee may appeal more here than at the nearby Sydney Cafe, or The Coffee Bean Cafe over the east side of town. That's because it's not as strong as we antipodeans like our coffee. But, saying that, the coffee is brewed well, revealling that heavenly arabica flavour in the aftertaste... subtle, yet defeintely enjoyable and masterfully pulled off!

gourmet seafood and grill: "OKA " to die for!

the food is great! not to mention cheap! there is 2 gourmet seafood and grills in apia both have thier own unique feel about it! 1 is situated in in town and the other along the harbour! service is great, you order at the counter and then take your seat, and you dont have to wait forever to get your food! they have a good range off food ranging from yummy burgers,seafood, steaks...for breakfast try the seafood omlette! my favourite dish would have to be the "oka" or as us maori's call it raw fish! it's tuna marinated in lime or lemon, with a coconut milk sauce! mouth watering and to die for! got to get in early for lunch if you want to try it...because it sells fast! and trust me you dont want to miss out on the oka!

Gourment Seafood: Good eats in Apia...

Gourmet Seafood and Grill may be one of the best cheaper places to eat in Apia.It is a very pleasant patioed restaurant where you order at the till and then they call your number or bring your meal to you.They have everything here. They have the best 'Oka" (raw fish marinated in lime served in a sauce of coconut milk and chopped veggies)They also have the whole range of "American" style burgers, chips, bacon and eggs, milkshakes, ice cream and the works. They usually have lasagne, spaghetti, shepard's pie and all those standard fare goodies. The food is very good and the prices reasonable.They have very good seafood as well hence the name. Try the "Mahi Mahi" and chips The "Oka" here is the best in Samoa....Get there early for lunch if you want Oka, as it sells out quickly and they only make so much per day.They also make "Poke", the Hawaiian form of raw fish in Teriyaki sauce, which I...

This is not realy a restaurant tip, but sometimes there is no restaurants nearby.This is no reason to worry, but rather an oportunity to get a sample of real local food.For example if you are staying at fales out of town. The dish pictured here is todays catch with bananas in coconut sauce.

Coconut Trees: I like Palms

You don't have to go to a restaurant to get Coconuts- if you're not careful one will drop on you hear and kill you! Seriously- be careful. If you want a cocnut, fresh from a tree, you can probably find someone to teach you how to climb one. If you go to Tui's they'll teach you out at the plantation if you want. In Apia, 1 tala for a cold cocnut at the market. There's a lady outside standing behind a big freezer selling them. it's not written in English though. If you're cheap you' can drink Coconut instead of bottled water- and it's much tastier.

Market: I like TARO

Market in Salelologa, Savai'i- Taro comes in all sizes- mostly very BIG. But it's not the tastiest thing I ever had. Kind of like those dry sticky bananas. But you won't be able to say you didn't get enough starch in Samoa!

Home Stay: I like Pig

At Tui's house we had the best food one can imagine. More on Tui's family home/ fale stay in the Savai'i section. Here is Tui's freezer- got a whole pig in there it looks like! If you want you can go watch one of the boys shoot a pig- no thanks, I passed on that one. It was only by chance of gik's never ending hunger that she opened their freezer and found this photogenic shot for me.
