Maketi Fou: The Central Market has it all!

by worldkiwi

Maketi Fou is Apia's noisy, 'aromatic', busy central market. There's a huge area for produce sellers, but also a large are of craft stalls and cooked food take-away places. Here you can find tacky lava-lavas branded with Nike and Addidas logos! It is well worth a look around and soaking up the atmosphere. Next door, the egnine noise and petrol fumes will let you know you've found the central bus station... this is worth a walk through too, just to see the brightly painted Samoan buses! Handicrafts here and also the "craft market" on the waterfront.Fruit and veges (stock up if you're heading to a fale on the south coast).A "labelled" lava-lava??

Old Apia Market: Apia's Flea Market

by FelixB

The flea market is in a shed-style hall in the centre of Apia. Right next to us us the central bus station from where all buses depart from.Inside the hall is a huge amount of sellers who each has their own booth. The are small corridors through the hall arranged like a chessboard. Almost all of the booths have the same stock. It's mainly local crafts and other small things, like sandals and other beach wear.Crafts include traditional Samoan weapons, in big and miniature, small Samoan style canoes, masks and other carvings.I would suggest a Samoan club, a weapon which was used in tribal wars in the past, as they seem pretty unique.Another great souvenir would be the Lavalava. It's some kind of traditional sarong worn by most of both female and male Samoans. Prices are quite low, but bargaining is always a good idea. They usually will go down with prices.
