    Otintaai Hotel: Overrated but OK

  • The Otintaai Hotel has a public restaurant which has a big reputation in Kiribati, but mainly due to it being the only truly bona fide international restaurant in the country (there are some decent Chinese ones). It is expensive by Kiribati standards, although very affordable compared to prices in developed countries. The food is OK, but nothing special, comprised of western and Asian dishes plus local seafood. They have a cheap night and a barbecue night once a week, but I forgot which nights they were.

  • Directions: EVERYBODY knows the hotel, so just ask to be taken there. Or, if driving yourself, you can't get lost in Kiribati - only one road! Head west from the airport for about 20 minutes.

    Laguna: The guidebooks are right!

  • This is under new management with a new name (I forgot the previous name) but is essentially the same place. Situated next to Mary's Motel in Bairiki, it is a locally-run establishment offering Pacific, Asian and Western dishes. It's clean, with nice staff and good ceiling fans!

Lonely Planet and various online source say the Crispy Chilli Fish is the best option, and I have to agree. It's delicious and crispy, with a tasty, tangy sauce and decent value.

My favourite drink in Kiribati was fresh coconut juice. But they did not serve that in the hotel restaurant, so I had something they called Island Cola instead. Not bad!

  • Pandanus Fruit - Kiribati
    Pandanus Fruit
    by Jim35
I don't remember there being any restaurants, but I do remember going to the 'maneaba' or central meeting hut for a feast and encountering a cooked fish so large that I could have crawled into it's open mouth...
Lobster: You ever think you'd get sick of lobster? I did. The native people thought we were crazy for even eating them. They considered them nasty sea-bugs that just tore up their fish nets, and they'd kill them and throw them back in. They probably laughed at my dad when he requested they keep them and give them to him. They'd send a girl over after every fishing trip to give the live lobsters to the crazy Americans.

Pandanas, what the natives called the 'walking tree' and we call the 'screw-pine' (quit giggling) is a tropical tree that grows a HUGE orange fruit. The fruit is comprised of a bunch of 'nodes' that you can pull off an chew. The juice is really sweet but you are left with a handful of fibers, so it's like eating an orange through a broom. MAN, I miss that stuff!!!
