War relics

by ollyf

Get the bus to Betio and check out the leftovers from the Battle of Tarawa, one of World War II's fiercest conflicts, which took place between the US and Japan.First of all, take a look around the town of Betio, which is the bustling population centre of Kiribati and is the only place to find reasonable shopping, facilities and nightlife.First of all, head to the harbour and walk along the lagoon side, heading west, and you'll get a good vista of various shipwrecks close to shore. Continue walking in that direction and you'll get to Red Beach, so called because of the colour of its sand, which is not actually red but is a darker colour than the usual white sands of Kiribati. I'm not sure if there is some geological explanation or it is simply discoloured through decades of littering and human waste being washed on to the beach. Yes, the sand and sea is filthy, so DO NOT SWIM, but it's...

WWII relics

by Rusket

This wreck is in the Butaritari lagoon. It is not a museum of any sort, the wreckages are just there because nobody have removed them.Large battles took place between Japan and USA during WWII. The linked page is Jane Restures page about these battles. In Betio, a part of the Tarawa atoll, one of the worst battles of the second world war took place. Many war relics can be seen there, especially at low tide.

Copramaking

by Rusket

Copra is a main export product from Kiribati. We visited a muto in the Butaritari lagoon, where local people move out for a couple of months each year to make copra. See the travelogue about the visit on my Gilbert Islands page.

Trip to Butaritari

by Rusket

Butaritari is one of the outer islands in the Gilberts, 1 hour by air north of Tarawa. Since Butaritari is not a destination of it's own in VT, I have made a travelogue about the trip on my Gilbert Island page. All in all the week we spent on Butaritari was the best part of our Kiribati adventure!

Trip to Abaiang

by Rusket

Abaiang is another Island in the Gilberts. It does not appear in the list of destinations, thus I made a travelogue about this journey on my Gilbert Islands page. Travelling around Kiribati has tought me a lot, like for instance: serenity, equanimity and patience. Why rush? The boat leaves when the tide is right and the plane arrives after dropping of some passangers on another island to make room for you. You WILL get to wherever you want to go, and the waiting gives you lots of time for contemplation :-)

Finding things on the beach

by Backpackermoose

It is great fun to walk on the beach and find things! My brother and I found this scull, and I put it on my head to scare Mom afterwards. I am sure it used to belong to a BIG and sceary animal. But Mom says the biggest animals in Kiribati are dogs and pigs, and that they were imported, whatever that means, by humans. Maybe this scull came from a country far away?

Not a moose thing

by Backpackermoose

Definitely not a thing to do for a moose from the big forests. 3 1/2 hours on this boat, and the waves were HUGE. My brother and I got SOOO seasick :-( But the dolphins who played around the boat were cute.(Yes, I know my mother has used this picture, too, but I just had to warn you!)

Snorkling

by Jim35

Kiribati is a chain of atols and, as such, they are mostly reef. The oceanside reef on Beru went out for what seemed like miles but was still only less than neck deep... You can just float around looking down at hundreds of species of tropical fish... but wear shoes since the coral is sharp and will cut you up.Also watch out for the drag... the water seems very still, but subtle wave action is actually pulling out out to the ocean.

Visit Abaiang's main church

by glenn57

This is the large Catholic church on Abaiang, made of limestone. It is of impressive size, given how few people live on Abaiang. It is in the village of Koinawa, not far from the school.

See the motus

by glenn57

Here is the motu (tiny island on the reef) from the room I was staying in on Tarawa.
