    Tarawa Restaurants

The first day of our stay at Otiintai we saw a big tunafish laying outside the hotel kitchen, and we could smell it the rest of our stay. Not that it smelled badly, but anything we ate in that hotel had the taste of tunafish afterwards, even the steak. Maybe they have only one frying pan, and maybe they don't wash it very often? When people in...

    Tarawa Restaurants

Most of the places we ate they tried to sell some kind of western or asian inspired food, often with imported ingredients. The food was often quite tasteless. I don't know why, when they have an ocean full of fish, lobsters, shell ..., and they do have their own vegetables and fruits, depending on the local habitat on the different islands.The...

    Tarawa Things to Do

Very nice camp site on an isolated part of the Tarawa atoll, administered by the government and supervised by a watchman, his old father, his dog and his cat. The best way to get there is to pay somebody to take you by boat. It is possible to go by minibus to the northern end of the road and by foot the rest of the way, but this is only possible...

  • Cargo ship

    Betio Transportation

The only way (in 2001) to get to Tarawa other than by plane from Fiji or Nauru, is by cargo vessels from Australia, The Gilberts or the Line Islands. There are also boats to and from other islands in the Gilberts. Be there early, be prepared to wait a LONG time, and be sure you have enough drinking water. There are no facilities in the harbour...

  • Bus trip on the reef

    Betio Transportation

The bus trip from Bairiki is quite spectacular! On some places the atoll is so narrow that it is literally only a reef with a road on top. Some of the buses do a round trip in Betio, which is a cheap and effective way of seeing the town. But be aware that not all the buses going through Bairiki go all the way to Betio, ask the driver or the ticket...

    Betio Warnings and Dangers

glenn57 says in a tip that Betio is known to be rough at night, I found it to be rather rough at day, too. My son and I ended up in some kind of a shack around lunch hour, it was a mix between cafe and night club, with a couple of drunks hanging out. The food was not very good, but we did not find anything better.
