Things to Do

Dont miss the church of Easo

Dont miss the church of Easo, Lifou

globetrott Says:  Easo is the first village that you will get to, when walking from the place, where you cruiseship will take you ashore. This church looks very nice from inside as well and all of the tours organized by your cruiseship will stop there for a short time. The church was built in...

Baie de Jinek - a great, sandy beach

Baie de Jinek - a great, sandy beach, Lifou

globetrott Says:  Baie de Jinek is a great, sandy beach, about half way from the place where you will get out of the tenderboats and the chapel "Notre Dame de Lourdes"You will find some facilities on that beach, like changing-rooms, toilets and a small tent with refreshments. No entrancefee...

butterflies are all over

butterflies are all over, Lifou

globetrott Says:  I have never seen so many butterfies in a single place like in Lifou / New Caledonia. Maybe it was the time of the year (Beginning of November, that is early spring in that part of the world), maybe it is a lack of natural enemies on this quite small island in the Pazific...

the cemetery of Easo

the cemetery of Easo, Lifou

globetrott Says:  Dont miss to take a look at the cemetery of Easo as well, when you visit the church there. It was interesting to see some different styles of graves there and also the idea to have a hat on top of the grave, like you see it in my 2nd picture here.I also saw some...

the chapel "Notre Dame de Lourdes"

the chapel "Notre Dame de Lourdes", Lifou

globetrott Says:  When you get to Lifou by cruiseship you will see this chapel on top of a hill already from a large distance. Walking there is quite easy and will take about 30 minutes one way: fist it is an asphalted street and at the end there are quite steep steps uphill, but it was worth...

traditional huts

traditional huts, Lifou

globetrott Says:  You will find a traditional hut in the garden of most modern houses in Lifou, and while you are mostly not allowed to take a look inside of them, I found this one on my way to the chapel of the Mother of God, a signpost invited tourists to come in and take a look and leave a...

Private Tour from cruise stop, Easo

Private Tour from cruise stop, Easo, Lifou

Greydemon Says:  My plan to hire a car in Lifou fell flat when I found that a place described in Lonely Planet as 'Five minutes from Easo beach' turned out to be 20kms away. So, my wife and I were rather late looking for an alternative, most of the cruise ship tourists having boarded...

Ship's food....yum..!!!!

Ship's food....yum..!!!!, Lifou

Norm-NZ Says:  Food on board the Pacific Sky cruise ship is absolutely positively delicious. The quality and presentation of the food is 4 star plus. Range of food to suit everyone. If you go hungry on board Pacific Sky it's because your lips are super-glued together....

Various night clubs on board.: Night Clubs are fantastic...., Lifou

Norm-NZ Says:  On the cruise ship Pacific Sky there are many night clubs or night spot to enjoy and have fun... And I mean have fun, as in fantastic time. My favourite was the disco night-club. Starts at 10:30pm and finishes at dawn. Disco lights, DJs, coooool music, party atmosphere...

Transportation

Walking is the best option on this island

Walking is the best option on this island, Lifou

globetrott Says:  Walking is the best option on this island and within just a few minutes you will get to a nice sandy beach, you can walk to one of the 2 churches that I mention in my other tips, each of them is in a distance of ca. 30 minutes from the place, where you enter the island by...

sightseeing by taxi ?

sightseeing by taxi ?, Lifou

globetrott Says:  You will hardly find any taxis on this island !!! All cars and buses will be hired for the tours that are organized by the cruiseships. These tours are quite expensive, but also the only possibility to explore a bit more of this island. Some private cars also used to stop and...

by cruiseship to Lifou

by cruiseship to Lifou, Lifou

globetrott Says:  I came to Lifou onboard the Dawn Princess, a ship with around 2000 Passangers onboard, and so we had to anchor off the shore and take the passangers ashore by the small tender-boats.From the place, where the tenders landed I could do some easy walks, about half an our to...

rent a bike in Lifou

rent a bike in Lifou, Lifou

globetrott Says:  Right at the place, where the cruiseships will take their passangers ashore in the tenderboats you will find quite a lot of bicycles to rent. The island is almost totally flat and only at the beginning you have a short way uphill. Biking might still be quite exhausting in...

La Tortueuse de l'ile

La Tortueuse de l'ile, Lifou

drmjalba Says:  Mr. Tori (kanak name: Nganyane Watrire)works with Sama Discovery; He can organize trips around Lifou on demand at a price and he can transport you always in time to the airport. As an example, I chose to meet three professional wood carves in their ateliers and it was a very...

Take a pic, BUT dont pay anything !!!

Take a pic, BUT dont pay anything !!!, Lifou

globetrott Says:  I saw 3 quite large crabs in a tent close to the place, where cruiseships will get their passangers ashore in Lifou. 2 of these crabs had been fixed by a rope (my 2nd picture) on the table inside the tent and another one was fixed on a rope outside in the open sun. I am sure...

Warnings Or Dangers

Sharp corals close to shore.

Sharp corals close to shore., Lifou

peeweekathi Says:  Make sure you take some reef/aqua shoes with you and wear them when entering the clear waters, because there is lots of coral, close to the shore lines and you could rip your feet to shreds, without protection. Try not to step on the coral anyway, it needs to be preserved:)

Tourist Traps

The local children are cute, but.....

The local children are cute, but....., Lifou

peeweekathi Says:  Watch anything you leave on shore, while you're swimming/snorkelling or whatever. The local children would REALLY like them! They also come up to you and ask to 'borrow' your snorkelling masks, but you are unlikely to see that mask again, if you 'lend' it to them. They can...

Relax by the pool........, Lifou

Norm-NZ Says:  There are several swimming pools on board the cruise ship Pacific Sky. A great place to relax in the sun or the shade by the pool. Have a cocktail or a beer, or cool off by splashing around in the pool. Good place to work on your tan, or simply meet friends or make new...

Blue Skies and Blue Ocean......, Lifou

Norm-NZ Says:  As the ship Pacific Sky sailed away from Lifou Island towards our next island stop I wished I had more time, more days on the South Pacific island paradise..... My fondest memory of Lifou is the hot white sandy beaches, the green palm trees and coconut trees, and the clear...

Lifou was one of the islands that I got to on a cruise onboard of the Dawn Princess. You will see millions of butterflies and it was very warm there with a gentle breeze most of the time.
