Tahitian Dancing

by hunwagner

Several upmarket hotels in New Caledonia offer Tahitian dance shows to their guests. This is actually somewhat strange considering that native Kanak dances are not shown off to visitors in the same way.I guess hotels know that "sexy" Taihitian girls with their "erotic" dancing have a much higher entertainment value, and also fit the "South Pacific Paradise" image visitors to Oceania have been fed before coming here than Melanesians. In any case, Tahitian dancing is indeed good fun - be prepared to be dragged up by the girls to join in towards the end of it! ;-)

Le Luna Nightclub or Le Saint HerbertLe Luna has an amazing atmosphere and is generally packed on a sat night - it's a favourite hang out for the locals and the bar person is known to be more than generous with the 'on the house' tabLe Saint Herbert is in a prime position in Noumea - great location & great people.. it's the local bar No dress code for either.. though Le Luna tends to be 'smart, casual tropical wear' - if that makes any sense.. ie - no collared shirts, but no singlets either !

Whenever the ship did an overnighter it would always be a big night at Le Luna. I did also spend one night at Club Med which was ok.Le Luna was fun as crew could party with each other unlike on the ship. As it is a gay bar it was also interesting to watch the reactions from people who didn't realise it. Anything goes. The daggier the better. It gets very hot in there as there is no airconditioning & limited room.

I am constantly in search of 'the good (night) life' and, even on somewhat secluded New Caledonia, there were places to go and people to meet. But, honestly, it was much better to just sit out in front of my bungalow, watch the waves, have a fruit juice (for about 300 to 500 NCFrancs), and relax. That is what New Caledonia is all about -- relaxing and taking it slow and easy. One sad point -- it seems that even in secluded New Caledonia, the curse of karaoke has arrived and it can be heard (quite clearly!) just about everywhere there is a bar/club. If you can sing, please do everyone a favour and grab the mic from the people that can't but always do!! You are in the tropics and, for that matter, in the middle of nowhere and it's 'beach-bum heaven'. Dress-code?? Just, for everyone else's sake, wear a shirt and shorts and have a good time......
