Guidebooks

by hunwagner

The most detailed guidebooks to New Caledonia in English were produced by Lonely Planet.Note that the publisher has recently dumped the country together with Vanuatu in one book, which means that some of the earlier detail is inevitably lost. I suggest that you get a copy of the older editions to New Caledonia alone - this is a very stable place where not much changes. Another great guide to the wider region is Moon's South Pacific Handbook, that covers New Caledonia in good detail and is pretty up to date.

Packing List

by Kate-Me

If you're backpacking, I guess a backpack, otherwise a suitcase is fine. I wore mostly sandals. Don't forget the sun hat. Dia-stop or something in case of dehydration, plus the usual creams and bandaids. Insects don't seem to be too much of a problem. Normal photo equipment is fine. Save on batteries by buying them before you leave, and get them developed back at home. I haven't camped there, but I guess you just need the usual, lightweight stuff because of the heat and humidity. If I went back to Noumea again (and I just might - it was very pretty) I'd carry most of my own food (to save living on hotdogs!) and my own little camping stove. That would save a lot in meals.

Don't even think of taking anything fancy. Shorts, t-shirts and a beach dress (for women) will do you for day and night. No one dresses up at night except for the tourists. Just go with the flow and be relaxed. If you're into camping, pack a tent because there is some gorgeous camping sites around the country. Many have great facilities like clean showers and toilets.

Unless you speak French, this will be very useful at some point.Be prepared that hardly anybody speaks English in New Caledonia!

Snorkelling gear

by hunwagner

As usual in the South Pacific, having your own mask and snorkel is a very good idea.

A tent can save you a small fortune here - bring your own!

The only field guide to the birds of New Caledonia, this book is a must for anyone with an interest in the territory's fauna.

We spent over $20 to buy an umbrella for the day. But the weather was so muggy we didn't really care how wet we became!
