  • ThON STEAK: The best tuna and ox !

by thonsteak Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The restaurant is opposite the beach (Baie des Citrons), Steakhouse with amazing prices and quality. It's the best steak you will ever have with french fries.
Also a great sashimi (tuna) with his special sauce.

Anse De Kuendu: maybe the most scenic restaurant of New Caledonia

by globetrott Updated Jul 16, 2015

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This great Restaurant in Anse De Kuendu was built on stilts and in some parts you have a thatched Roof but no Windows, so you will get all the great fresh air into the dininghalls. Closeby there are waterslides etc. for the children and a wide garden-area to sit and enjoy the landscape and the tropic atmosphere !
This resort is such a quiet place in a scenic surrounding, with elegant Bungalows that were built quite similar to the traditional style of New Caledonia.
This hotel-restaurant is open for visitors as well and so it makes a perfect halfday or fulldaytrip, even when you spend the nights in another hotel of the Island or when you come on a cruise.

Favorite Dish: I only had a Cocktail in the short time that we had there as a stop of our Bustour around the Island, but next time I will go there and eat lunch or dinner !
Every Saturday & Sunday they will have a big lunch-buffet
    for 4350 XPF = 36 Euros = 46 US S = 29 GB P = 51 AUS S
Price is per Person without drinks

    Kanak food

by hunwagner Written Jul 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Traditional Kanak food is similar to that of the rest of the South Pacific.
It is based on tubers and local veggies, with meat and seafood if available, and is prepared in an earth-oven. The resulting dish is called bougna. Unfortunately, it is only prepared for special occassions, or - at a very high price - for tourists on order.

Everyday Kanak food has been somewhat influenced by French cuisine and makes use of rice and baguettes. This is also delicious, but is rarely offered for sale - the excellent and very cheap selection on this photo was sold by Kanak women at the Mwata Festival in Pouébo.

    French food

by hunwagner Written Jul 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As you might expect, there is a great selection of delicious French cuisine available in New Caledonia - what a treat after the Anglo-Saxon introduced culinary horrors in the rest of the region!
As you might also expect, it all comes at a price - good French restaurants are out of reach of budget travellers, though cheaper ones run by Vietnamese in Noumea are more affordable.
Also affordable are the fantastic sandwiches and French bakery products sold throughout urban areas, and the ubiquitous, cheap baguettes and paté available in every grocery store in New Caledonia are a self-catering budget traveller's saviour.

Hotel Ibis Restaurant: Seafood and Snails

    by Kate-Me Written Apr 18, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We only ate out at the restaurant a couple of times (just because it was conveniently attached to our hotel)

Favorite Dish: I can't remember what I had, just that I wasn't brave enough to try the escargot (snails) though one of my companions was.

    0.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The food in New Caledonia is amazing but, sadly, it is somewhat expensive -- given where you are and the food. Most (or at least a lot) of the food for New Caledonia must be shipped in (from Australia and so on) so prices are a bit high. Other than that -- it is a tropical feast everyday!!
In New Caledonia, it is not necessary to speak French but it is appreciated. Many people understand English but it should not be expected.?@Whenever you can, using the little French that you know will be greatly appreciated. So....en francais s'il vous plait!!

Favorite Dish: Fruit, fruit, and more fruit!!

In Noumea check out Le Saint Herbert, in Bourail 'El Kantara Hotel'
Le Saint Herbert - atmosphere was great, looking over Coconut Square in Noumea.. it's a favourite with the locals
Hotel El Kantara had the friendliest owners I've ever met.... this when I could barely get by with french

Favorite Dish: Le Saint Herbert restaurant (not to be confused with the bistro connected to the hotel - which is much more expensive!!) - have great french dishs and italian dishes..
El Kantara is in the middle of cattle country - their pepper steaks or crevettes (prawns) areb the best I've ever tasted...
