Internet Access
  • Tip Rating:
  • Internet Cafes are fine when on 100% tourist mode but many of us have work to do in tourist downtime. Typically hotels in Europe, U.S., Australia or Asia have net access in your room so you just plug in & go. Often it is broadband access- about $10U.S. per day is typical. Some cities like Singapore have Wi-Fi (wireless broadband) everywhere (over 150 "hot spots" there). Not so in Noumea... BE WARNED the ISP fees in Noumea are deadly. Dial up is possible via a local ISP (Lagoon) but it is the most expensive on the planet. I paid over $200 US ($500 AUS) for 4 hours dial up over my week's stay.. they initially wanted to charge $1000 Aus (70,000 Francs)!!

The non-work user can cope with internet cafe access to non-secure mail (Hotmail etc), but few options for business access.

Ensure you direct your email to a web based address, or ask your sys admin to enable a web front end, or arrange VPN access to your mail in cafe (tricky) . Probably cheapest to rent your own direct satellite uplink from the military!

    The Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The problem with the Zoo was, that nothing in the guide books indicated that many attractions closed for anything up to 2 hours 'siesta' over lunch time. We had to catch one of the rickety old buses some distance out of town, which left us at the foot of a large hill. It was hot and we were tired when we finally reached the top...only to find the zoo closed for siesta! We weren't going to wait 2 hours for it to open again, so I took one photo of the gates, and we left.

Just assume most attractions will close for lunch, and shops too (then you won't be so disappointed as we were). See attractions in the early morning or after 2.30 in the afternoon, to be on the safe side.

The main tourist trap I found...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main tourist trap I found was the exhorbitant price for most items. It was french atmosphere at more costly than French prices. Watch what you buy, and ignore brochures that say 'jade can be purchased reasonably'.

Go prepared that you might not find many bargains...and take extra cash with you!

When a cruise ship is in port...
  • Tip Rating:
  • When a cruise ship is in port on an island (not Noumea), the prices tend to 'inflate' - best avoid the normally emtpy beaches at the times as well.. they tend to get overcrowded.. Most popular cruise ship destinations - Lifou and Isle Of Pines
