Benmore Dam is also the starting point of the high voltage DC inter-island 500MW power connection.The dam has an output of 540 MW and is the site of the HVDC link for electricity transfer between the South and North Islands. The bright colour of the water is caused by fine dust carried down from the Tasman glacier.
