Oxford & columbus, Christchurch: What the %$#@

by wrldtravler

What's with christchurch and halloween. Seems like the locals took to it real hard. A night out on the town is all the reason you need to dress up. Regular friday night in christchurch mean's you will shake a leg with roller girl, vampire brides, hoes and super heroes.

Dunedin: Octagon Oasis

by wrldtravler

Dunedin's main city center is the octagon. There is a smaller INNER octagon and an outer octagon. The inner octagon has most of the clubs and pubs/bars with cafe style open seating and live music. As you fan out into the outer octagon you start to get more focused music options (rave clubs, rock joints etc).Small by anyone's standards dunedin city center is not to be mistaken for New York or Barcelona but it still has it's own charm and boisterous crowds. Dress nice who knows who you meet.

Various: Auckland Viaduct/ Marina Front

by wrldtravler

Dotted all over the auckland viaduct are cafe's that moonlight as clubs as the sun sets. With stunning views and a big percentage of locals, the marina is a brilliant place to pub hop and give those dancing shoes a much needed workout. Dress nice.. you never know who you could meet.

Skycity Tower

by wctan72

This place is packed with people at night albeit slightly expensive. Nevertheless its still worth the visit as this is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. Experience the glass elevator and panel while on the viewing area! Smart casual

Cowboys Pizza Kitchen: Viaduct area

by easterntrekker

This place might seem a little quiet in the afternoon but as soon as the work crowd gets out it fills up pretty fast . It's a fun place with a big range of clientele....people in business suits and touristy backpacker types. The pizza is good ...so are the calamari. They have a good wine list , lots of beers and tequila too! Casual

Occidental Belgian Beer Cafe: Vulcan Lane- for the after work crowd

by easterntrekker

OK so maybe it has nothing to do with New Zealand but we really enjoyed this bar/restaurant.It has a good selection of beers and wines and the mussels are excellent....and they at least are very true kiwi! There was a pretty good crowd there even on a week night. Whatever!!

Dance 'til dawn: Christchurch Dance Clubs

by fishandchips

Christchurch has a great nightclub scene if you are into dance music (ie drum&bass, house, trance etc). With places such as Ministry, Mansion, Eye Spy, Carbon, Base and the Civic Christchurch is well wet up if you are a bit younger and have plenty of energy. The flavour of the places vary from more Trance and House to full on Drum&base. If you are not sure which place will suit then walk around and visit a few of them. As they are all fairly close it isn't too hard on the feet!! Be aware though of a 1am lockout law that seems to have gained a foothold. Most of these places are open until the wee hours but a local law (enforced by the clubs at Police request) stops people from re-entering clubs after 1am. Once you are inside the club and having fun you can stay there all night but don't try to leave and go somewhere else if it's after 1am - you may not be allowed in!! Casual is normally...

Drink 'til Dawn: Courtenay Place, Wellington

by fishandchips

Courtenay Place is the one of the main spots to go out for an ale or 10 if you're in that sort of mood. With Bars such as Molly Mallone's it's a vibrant place to go for a big night out. There are a large number of bars, night-clubs and coffee shops to keep you going all night long. Dress code varies quite a bit with the posher places obviously wanting you to dress a bit nicer. Go out in smart casual and you should be okay - just don't go into the grungier coffee shops or clubs where you will stand out like a sore thumb.

Any place away from city lights: Un-beatable Nighttime Entertainment

by wondering2

Get yourself a sheet, blanket or sleeping bag. Lay on your back and look up at the stars. Try to spot the Southern Cross, Milky Way, Orion, and shooting stars. We say the "Sky Lab" satellites a few times wandering their way across the sky.An unbeatable experience!! Jeans and a Sweatshirt. Also insect repellent. : )

Anyplace: Auckland's Harbour -- Full of Nighttime Activity

by AKtravelers

The area around Auckland's harbour is a great place for eating and bar-hopping. We only had one night in Auckland, so we can't rerally make any specific recommendations, but we found a great place to eat just by asking a friendly local. There are plenty of bar and restaurants that allow for al fresco dining and drinking, there was an outdoor movie screen showing some sort of film (we didn't get close enough to hear) and bars with (of course) rugby on TV. Everyone seemed like they were having a good time, as were we.
