The Student Pubs:1. The Captain Cook tavern, known as the Cook to all students, ex-students, and the regulars. Great place to meet up with friends and have a few quiets in the garden bar. Often cheap drinks before 11pm. After 12 it's time to boggey upstairs. Great student pub: cheaps drinks, great atmosphere, mainly student. Great place to watch the big rugby or cricket game on huge TVs. Food is good, well.... good for a pub, and cheap. Can buy crates of beer, ie. 12 x 750 mL beer bottles over the counter. Anything goes, but need to wear shoes!

Well that last comment pretty much sums up why you don't want to go to Auckland - the people! Most tourists tend to fly in and then get out as fast as possible and head further south. Try Wellington for lots of trendy cafes and you can't skip out The Strip in Christchurch, a whole street of hot bars. Both places have all the nightclubs you're gonna wanna visit in a night. Christchurch has quite large casino, and I *think* Wellington does to. Reasonably Casual. The casinos are more strict. There are rules that apply to most bars and cafes too, for example, no gangpatches and shoes and socks must be worn.

I think the Blue Pub was the best. It's pretty easy to try them all out for yourself though, there's not that many to choose from. They would bring snow down from the mountain and have a huck-fest type of competition infront of the Pub. That was always pretty fun. It's blue.

Sonic Bar in Kaikoura: Sonic Bar in Kaikoura

by James_Cooke

It's not the most crowded pub, but it's nice to drink your pint with some cool people in this friendly place. The decoration is very good too (a hudge metalic fish on the wall for example). When I was there for the xth time there was a Salmonela Dub Concert, if you go, ask if they have some special events coming on.

For something different, try the Christchurch pub-crawl (by Jim The Eagle). The trips are run almost everyday. Price was very reasonable ...if I remember correctly, it was under $15.00 US. The fee includes 5 beers and 5 pubs (transportation included)...and a T-shirt!By bar #3, everyone is very comfortable ...and things start getting wild. Very informal. You get a pub-crawl T-shirt with your fee.

Dux de Lux, Christchurch: Dux de Lux, Christchurch

by Fleur_D

Wonderful old character pub, often with live music, in Chch's Arts Centre - it's actually the old university student union building. Great beer garden, and great site-brewed boutique beers that have won many awards. A wee bit 'counter-culture', but only a tiny bit! Popular student/artists/musicians hangout, especially if there's a jazz band. Casual but cool. A little bit 'rock'n'roll', a little bit trendy - and you'll fit in. Like everywhere in NZ, though, the Dux is very relaxed on the door and it's unlikely you'll be denied entry no matter what you are wearing.

by mark88

The Junction is the place to be after a days skiing. Lots of bars and clubs that go on into the small hours. If you like native wood then some of the bars here have lots of it. Casual dress will get you into most places. If your not too scruffy you should get by the bouncers.

IN Auckland where ever you go...

by Mantermite

IN Auckland where ever you go there is going to be a nightlife.Parnell has good restaurants and some bar/nightclubs, the same is said for Ponsonby but with many more with a late night cafe selling coffee and snacks deep into the early hours and then Kanragahape Road(K road as it is called more) has a select amount of dancing clubs to go to with every sort of music you can find and of course Queen Street with its vast selection of bars, clubs, dancing zones and many more on streets surrounding the area. Lots of live bands all over the place but 2 places to go to are the Dog's Bollox pub and the Kings Arms. Live bands every night all week!!!! Dress code is always a generally good standard but watch your feet sandals and sneakers are a nono most times, if in early/mid 20's expect to hand out ID to the bouncers but not always.
