Minus 5: A Bar made completely of ice, bar, seats and all!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't go inside as my friends couldn't bare the cold. But I hope to return. It's a room refrigerated to -5deg C. the bar and the furniture are all made from ice.
The entry cost is $20 which includes the first cocktail drink. I gather the drinks after that are not cheap, but someone has to pay for the room!! (iced and all I mean!)
Minus 5 is in the Hewlett Packard building, white hexagonal and large.

They give you Blizzard coats to wear, you can have sheepskin boots if you like too.
At Minus 5 deg Celcius, you need this clothing to keep you warm!

Daikoku on Elliot: Not just a place to eat.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place is an evening of entertainment as well as a place to eat. I don't mean a floor show, I just mean the way they present the meal. Sitting around the hotplate and having the chef right there, working in front of you is really a kind of entertainment.
The Chef throws the condiment shakers as a night club barman throws the drinks shakers. And then when he gets out the matches, lean back, look what is next!!

**This tip is dedicted to Tropicdiver who once said I had no nightlife tips...**

    Tidy.

Finalie Restaurant and Cabaret: Drag Queen Extravaganza
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are looking for a great night out with a group of friends, its hard to go past "Finale Restaurant and Cabaret". It is dinner theatre with a twist - a drag queen show which is absolutely excellent.

For the price you get a 3 course dinner and show plus the opportunity to stay on dancing afterwards.

Shows are on Wednesday through to Saturday nights for dinner only.

Dinner at Portofino: Take a Break - The Link Ferry Over to Devonport
  • Tip Rating:
  • PHOTO: AUCKLAND AT DUSK FROM DEVONPORT PARK NEAR THE FERRY TERMINAL.

If you are staying in Auckland, this will be a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Auckland. Take the Link ferry from the Auckland Ferry Terminal to Devonport and walk up main street. Portofino is on the right side of the street (facing away from the harbor) about halfway through the village. If you come early enough you can visit the wonderful book store and other shope in Devonport (most close at 6 pm).

    Sky City: Various entertainment
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Sky City houses two casinos as well as a number of restaurants and bars, and the Sky City Theatre. The observation levels in the tower are also open until 10.30, so altogether the complex is a good place for one or several nights in Auckland. My favourite restaurant was the Orbit - a revolving restaurant in the Sky Tower with stunning views, especially at night when all those little lights twinkle around the city.

The Sky City Casino is casual, the Alto Casino is smart (no jeans, sneakers, shorts). Guests must be at least 20 in both casinos. There is no dress code in the restaurants.

The Owl Bar: A beer on K-Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • As soon as I spotted the blue and white owl logo of The Owl Bar on Auckland's Karangahape Road, I felt as though I had to go in for a beer!!!

The bar's logo has a remarkable similarity to that of my beloved football club, Sheffield Wednesday!! I'd like to think that the bar is owned by an exiled SWFC fan, but I never managed to ascertain whether or not that is the case!

So, one afternoon I popped in for a quick beer.

This is very much a local pub rather than a place for tourists to visit. The pub's interior has a separate room full of fruit machines (or "pokies" as they are known locally) and a pool table.

The few clientele that were in the bar at the time of my visit were trying their luck on the fruit machines. Given the price of the beers here, I probably should have done likewise!! ;-)

Unfortunately, the pub offers no beers on tap, but it does have a reasonable selection of expensive bottled beers. I paid 5.50 NZD for a 330ml bottle of Steinlager

Unless you're a Wednesdayite like me, there is no reason to make a special effort to visit this bar. However, if you're looking for a beer on K-Road, this is as good a place as any!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok,I've been to the nightlife in many western countries (USA,Aussie,UK) and let me tell you - lil ol NZ rocks the house if you know where to go!Feel like Top 20 music, shakin' your booty to Beyonce?Head to the Viaduct in Downtown, with Top 20 clubs like Degree,Waterfront,Coast Bar,Float and more!(Also, the Latino club Wildfire and Minus 5,a bar made entirely of ice!!!).If you feel like a retro night, head to Boogie Wonderland just in the Britomart Complex! For good hip hop, check out The Lounge on High Street, which plays good stuff like Scribe,Kelis,Mase,Nelly etc.,or try 420 on K'Rd,or Ploom on Galatos street downstairs from Galatos Bar,off K Rd.It usually has battles and an MC with lotsa Kiwi hip hop.For a Jamaican Bahamas music,go to the Khuja Lounge,at the top of Queen Street. For all you hard house people, stick to K'Rd - places like Ink,Blend,Ibiza,Kiss Bar,Verona and many more play all that stuff (not really me). And,thats just the beginning!Auckland is dotted with great clubbing scenes, whether it be Parnall,Newmarket,Ponsonby, the City or even funky strips in Manukau or Takapuna!Try it - it may surprise you!

Most places are flexible - although the Viaduct clubs usually insist on men wearing collars.Girls usually wear minis, heals and tops or jeans, heels and tops.Just look stylish, becuase everyone else looks pretty damn good!!!

    Shakespeare Tavern and Brewery
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Shakespeare Tavern has been a very popular pub over the years. These days its draws quite an eclectic crowd despite the traditional English-style and unpretentious decor. Usually its loud and casual and just a great place to hang out. It was the pioneer of the boutique-brewery industry. They brew their own beer on the premises, which is the attraction. They have seven regular brews and other specialities depending on the whim of the brewer. Apparently their ales are especially tasty. There is a bar downstairs with some tables and booths, a Casino bar on the 2nd Floor and a bar and café on the 3rd floor.

    Open from 11.30am until late.

    Showgirls
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are looking for something a little ‘hotter’ in nightspots then this is claimed (by them) to be the hottest spot in Auckland. Lots of ladies in quite a flashy décor complete with lasers, lights waterfalls and smoke (for effect). They also claim to have a large range of alcoholic choices which are not available anywhere else in NZ. There are also private rooms and yes, it is a strip club and not personally checked out by the writer.
