Western Park, Te Rimu Tahi, in the suburb of Ponsonby and near Freemans Bay, is one of Auckland's oldest parks. Opened, officially to the public, on 17 Nov 1879. It is a great place to sit in the sun and eat or read, but just to appreciate some grass and trees in the middle of the city.

    Hauraki Gulf: Dolphins Up Close
  • Tip Rating:
  • Auckland's Dolphin & Whale Safari leaves Viaduct Harbour for the Hauraki Gulf for a 4 hour safari. Of course there's no garantee for succes, but we spotted a big pod of bottlenose dolpins, a huge pod of common dolphins and even a whale! Skipper Andy is passionate about his business and gives you all the insights in a dolphins life. Very amusing at times. This is a motivated, respectful organisation that wants to share their love for the Hauraki Gulf with us. Had a marvelous day! Lunch (sandwiches) included.

Bird Watching in the Firth of Thames
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are into Bird Watching I would suggest that you travel along the Firth of Thames - there is a road that runs from Clevedon down through Kaiaua with options to head off East to Thames or back onto the Main State Highway 2. There is a Bird Watching Centre based in Miranda and if you need a place to stay you should visit Miranda Holiday Park. They can be found about an hours drive south east of Auckland via State Highway 1. 2 and 25 or via the Pacific Coast Highway and Seabird Coast to the Coromandel Peninsula. There are powered tent sites, chalets, a family unit as well as a bunk house and tent sites. All this is contained within lovely landscaped grounds. The birdlife below were actually living in the Holiday park, but the "real" birdlife is out on the beaches and swamp.

Hauraki Gulf: Walk around the crater's rim
  • Tip Rating:
  • For a quiet day in the Hauraki Gulf, visit Rangitoto Island (Fuller's ferry). Maps of walks can be found on the wharf. Enjoy the track up to the summit and then take a loop walk around the crater's rim. Bring good walking shoes and a picnic!

Hauraki Gulf: Volcanic Plug - Rangitoto
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just off the coast of Auckland is this volcanic cone that erupted from the sea some 600 years ago. Its virtually completely covered in lush vegetation and the peak can be seen from virtually anywhere in Auckland. You can tramp round the island or up to the rim of the volcano itself (or you can take a special day trip including transport to the top) Connected by a causeway is Motutapu (in the foreground of the photo) - in complete contrast this is covered by grassland and is much gentler landscape. 3 ferries a day cross to Rangitoto from Auckland (and to spend any signifiant time you would need to catch the early morning one).

Auckland Zoological Park: A day at the zoo in Auckland.

    Sealion at Auckland Zoo.
    by worldkiwi

Auckland Zoo may not be particularly vast on a world scale, nor does it have the diverse range of animals of some world zoos, but it is one of my favourite ways to spend a day. The gardens are really pleasant to wander around and the enclosures are continually being upgraded to standards on a par with the world's best zoos. In February 2003, I saw the new sealion enclosure for the first time. Wow. You can watch the seals from underwater and the experience is amazing. Classical music plays, the sealions glide past upside down with their eyes shut, looking like they're in a state of bliss and the whole thing is strangely quite soothing. On the day I visited, I didn't know who was having a better time - the sealions or us! I was transfixed and oddly detached. I had to tear myself away from watching them. If you need de-stressing, I can recommend this particular part of the zoo! The 'Pridelands' area is modelled on allowing the visitors to see the animals in more natural surroundings. The hippo enclosure is particularly good. Take your lunch and picnic in the zoo. It is a really nice day out. Make sure you visit the Kiwi House, where you can see NZ's national icon (the rare Kiwi bird). To get to the zoo, take the Northwestern Motorway from the city and exit at Western Springs. Turn left onto Great North Road and turn right at Motions Road which leads you to the zoo carpark. Entry is NZ$16 per adult (as at January 2006). See my travelogue for more pictures from a visit to the zoo in Jan 2006.

    Savage Memorial Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Park is named after the first Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand and the founder of the Welfare State, Michael Joseph Savage. It's a pleasant place, green and calm, with the memorial and beautiful panoramic views. It's located on Bastion Point, off Tamaki Drive (a a short walk).

Only one word is good enough to describe Tiritiri Matangi: Paradise! Once this little island in the Hauraki Gulf, only 30km north of Auckland, was destroyed by extensive farming, now it is a bird paradise, run by volunteers who replanted native vegetation. They also look after many endangered and common endemic and native birds. The stars are the takahes. Those big flightless birds have been thought to be extinct for 50 years until they were found again in 1948. On Tiritiri M. you can easily imagine how this could happen. They are absolutely fearless and do not bother your company at all, they walk and graze a metre in front of you. That is the reason why they now have to live in protected areas and on predator-free islands like Tiritiri Matangi. Other birds enjoy such perfect conditions as well. You will see red-crowned parakeets sitting on the stakes of flax, tuis, etc. Nowhere else in New Zealand can you readily walk amongst so many species. 78 different kinds of birds have been spotted on the island. You can walk on your own in this open sanctuary. Take the Kawau Kat Ferry from Auckland (1:15h) - departure at 9am, Wednesday to Sunday only, return at 4pm. This service ensures that there are only 150 visitors per day on the island. After an introduction by a volunteer at the wharf you can explore the island. Buy a map in Auckland or on the ferry (1 NZ$) or download it from the Tiritiri website, take something to eat and drink with you, then keep to the left (towards Hobbs Beach) while most people walk directly up to the lighthouse and a takahe enclosure. Take your time to sit on the benches in the forests - when you are still a lot more birds will fly around you. The fantails are the exception. As you know, they try to catch the insects that flee from you... ;-) The takahes spend their day in grassland. Allow four to five hours for the walk. There are also short guided tours on offer. Accommodation possible.

Mt Eden: Amble through Eden Garden.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Eden Garden is a privately operated garden open to the public on the slopes of Auckland's largest mainland volcano, Mt Eden. The garden occupies an abandoned quarry and was developed from 1964. Today it is full of pleasant walkways through shady groves of native and exotic trees. There is a nice cafe to refuel in. It costs NZ$5 to enter. The garden is situated in Epsom, a central city suburb. Its address is 24 Omana Avenue. Public buses stop nearby.
