Hauraki Gulf: Waiheke Island
35 minutes by ferry from Auckland - see separate pages for Waiheke Island. But the journey across the bay is a stunning experience in itself.

    Piha
About an hour from Auckland on the west coast is Piha, with beautiful beaches and nice waves for the surfers. There is a nice campground near the beach, although there are few options for eating. We brought our own lunch and enjoyed it on the beach.

Be careful if you decide to take a walk up the hill as there are nasty bushes that cover much of the hillside that can be quite painful to fall into.

Take control of a plane over Auckland!
At North Shore Aerodrome in Dairy Flat (on the rural fringe of Auckland's North Shore), you can pay NZ$75 for a 30 minute flight over the coast. During the flight you can even take control of the plane and try a bit of piloting!
This is also the place to go if you want to fly Great Barrier Airlines to Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

Auckland Domain, a huge park not too far away from downtown, is situated on one of Auckland's volcano’s. At the top, near the building, you have a wonderful view over the city and Hauraki Gulf.

Off course it has its famous War Memorial Museum (an absolutely must see activity), but not far away, in the middle of the wonderful gardens, you will find the two greenhouses.
They are a heritage of the Auckland Exhibition of 1913. Nowadays the greenhouses are full of colourful flowers and green (sub)tropical plants.

Between the two buildings is a lovely pond. Next to the Winter Gardens is a special ‘fern park’.

    Auckland Festivals Galore
Auckland has a lot of really good, free festivals that are put on at different times throughout the whole year. There are multicultural ones like Diwali (Indian new year), the Lantern festival (end of the Chinese New Year) or the largest Polynesian festival, Pasifika. There are musical ones like the Mission Bay Jazz & Blues Streetfest or Music in the Parks throughout the summer, where even some popular New Zealand artists perform with free general admission.

The one I would most recommend going to is Pasifika, which is very busy and can be a little dizzying, but is worth spending the day soaking up the different Pacific Island countries and their culture.

    Bucklands Beach
Bucklands Beach is also on the eastern side of Auckland and next to Half Moon Bay Marina. The Yacht club was host to the 1999 and 2002 Louis Vuitton cup challenge races for the America’s Cup. The club which overlooks the marina and Tamaki Estuary, has three bars and a bistro. The Marina is mostly only available to permanent members but some visitor berths may be available by prior arrangement. The opening hours of the marina is 8,30am -15.00pm .

    Eastern Beach
Eastern Beach was previously called Mason’s Beach. This beach was a great source for food, not only for the Maori but also for the Pakeha population that followed. The eastern beaches tend to have calmer waters and generally make for safe swimming.

    (East Auckland -roughly 20kms)

    Eden Garden: green oasis

Eden Garden is the work of volunteers, who started in 1964. They transformed an abandoned quarry on the slopes of Mt. Eden into one of Auckland’s best kept secrets.

The garden has nowadays the most varied collection camellias and a large number of rhododendrons, but also hibiscus and a lot of native (green) New Zealand plants and trees.

From the top at a lookout you will have a nice view over the city.
The café with its garden setting is ideal for drinking a cup of coffee or tea.
