Waterfront Café: Best kept secret!

Waterfront Caf overlooking the wharf.

Open 7 days, 8.00am till late. Breakfast Lunch and Dinner.
Most people head for the Viaduct Basin and it's array of eateries. However it is rather expensive there, albeit nice and modern. I have known a while now about this place. Just a few steps from the Basin, and I think the best kept secret, is Waterfront Café. The food is superb, the service great, and the prices slightly cheaper.
You look over water, which is always a plus. And you can sit inside or on the verandah, which is mostly very protected from the wind. Even when it's not nice to sit outside elsewhere, it's sometimes still possible here.
Sometimes a little hard to locate from the street, look for the Maritime Museum and just go into the building and ask for the café, I'm sure you'll be happy you made the effort.
Even Bill Clinton dined here !!

Favorite Dish: Well I love an old favourite, fish and chips. This translated is fish with fries. Chose the Schnapper if they have it, it's simply the best! You get plenty of food and don't leave hungry. I had this during the day, it cost $18.50.
There are several seafood dishes for less than $NZ20.
Lots of salad meals for around $NZ15.
A nice selection of meat mains for less than $NZ20.
Mexican and Pasta dishes, around $NZ18.
All very nice meals of a nice size and all very affordable.

Sarah and I needed an excuse to come visit Auckland, and there was just such a reason when Kiwi decided to throw a mid-winter VT meeting. Her choice for the restaurant was the Waterfront Cafe, which is considered the most reasonably priced restaurant in a high price region of Auckland called the Viaduct Basin.

The evening was very exciting, especially meeting that many VT Kiwis in one place. Some even brought their mothers :)

For dinner, I had the lamb shanks which were very tasty, even without any mint jelly. I also got to enjoy several of the nice beers from the Monteith Brewery.

Waterfront Café: Great food, waterfront location!

Waterfront Cafe, Auckland.

This busy and laid-back restaurant is situated in the heart of downtown Auckland's waterfront restaurant area.
At a July 2005 mid-winter get-together there we all had excellent dinners that were prepared well and speedily.
The restaurant is a good place to meet before a night on the town, but not really a place for a quiet chat. There is a long bar in the restaurant and indoor-outdoor seating.

Favorite Dish: I can recommend the sirloin steak in mushroom sauce. It comes with nicely roasted vegetables and somewhat incongruosly (for the middle of winter), a green salad.

View from the Waterfront Cafe

Located within the Maritime Museum, but accessible to members of the pubic, The Waterfront Cafe gives a great view of one of the recreational parts of Auckland's waterfront, including the Hilton Hotel.
