Aotea square is in the middle of town in the upper part of Queen Street. It is a melting pot of all peoples of Auckland from business people sitting down for a lunch break to local street kids wanting a place to snooze!! The entrance is through a very well structured Maori carving which doubles as as an arch way. The square is multi layered and there are lots of seats plus plenty of space to kick a ball around.

The square gained notoriety a few years ago when there were riots down Queen street. These are thankfully well behind us!!

Aotea Square

Aotea Square is the centre of the city of Auckland. It is a place for gatherings and open-air concerts. The Aotea Centre, Auckland's main conference hall, is sited on the western side of the square, and the Auckland town hall is to the southeast..

beautiful arch on aotea square

Aotea is a nice little square with a beautiful monument in the middle. I didnt get to do much since it was raining while i was there. But have a little stroll, relax and maybe munch on a cookie/sanwich.

The statue of a former Auckland City mayor was placed in Aotea Square in 2002. Sir Dove-Myer Robinson or ‘Robbie’ as he was affectionately known, serves to honour the mayor for his amazing contribution to the city. The unveiling coincided with what would have been the mayors 100th anniversary of his birth.

The Aotea Centre was first opened in 1990 by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The centre hosts performances by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand Symphony and Opera as well as being a venue for overseas artists, conventions and exhibitions. There is no admission to view the centre.

If you want to go and see a Movie, head for Aotea Square. There is a village cinema right next door.

As for Aotea Square itself, well, it's certainly an eyesore.
