Auckland Art Gallery: The Auckland Art Gallery
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gallery first opened in 1888 and is just up from Queen Street and is supposed to contain the largest and most comprehensive collection of New Zealand and international art in the country. There is a rotation of displays both of its own collections which range from the 14th century to the present as well as showing international exhibits from time to time. There is also a research library, café and shop. The building is a beautiful Victorian / French Chateau style. There are free guided tours which begin at 2pm daily.

    Gallery hours : 10am-5pm daily.

Queen Street & Downtown: Queen Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Queen Street is the main thoroughfare of downtown Auckland. It begins at the edge of the harbour at Queen Elisabeth II Square and runs right up (hill) to Karangahape Road. Most of the interest is from where Queen Street starts to level out with all the shopping, galleries and entertainment areas mostly in this area. At the bottom end you will find all the harbour cruises and ferries to outer islands. The transport centre is also at the lower end of the Queen Street.

The first Queen Street wharf was built in 1852. Before that time goods that were imported had to be unloaded into boats and then transported to shore. The old courthouse, gaol, gallow and stocks were on the corner of Victoria and Queens Streets… much of the lower part of Queen street was just clay roads while the top end leading up to Karangahape Road was just a rough track.

New Zealand National Maritime Museum: The NZ Maritime Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The NZ Maritime Museum sits right on the waterfront next to the Ferry Building. There are many restored vessels on display both in the museum and floating in the marina. The exhibits also cover 1000 years of maritime history and include stories of Polynesian voyages, immigration, navigation and whaling. There are daily cruises available on the scow “Ted Ashby”, which sets sail when the cannon is fired at noon.

The museum is open 9am-6pm daily (summer). 9am-5pm daily (winter) and an admission is charged.

Albert Park & Auckland University: Old Art Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • The old Arts Building of the University is a highly original landmark. It was built between 1923 and 1926. The designers were Roy Lippincott and his partner Edward Billson. The main block has a highly distinctive clock tower. The style is described as an elegant Arts and Crafts interpretation of Perpendicular Gothic and was much criticised for being insufficiently 'English'.

    Victoria Park Market: Souvenirstop
  • Tip Rating:
  • Victoria Park Market is a great place to get your gifts. I found the stuff on Queenstreet rather 'more of the same', so ended up at V.Market and got some really special gifts. It's not too big, but cosy and it has all you want for presents. Treat yourself!

    Parnell: Judges Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the other end of Parnell you will find Judges Bay. The Bay has now been cut off from the water by the road, creating a salt water "lake" which is still used for swiming on a regular basis. Just opposite the Parnell Rose Gardens is another Reserve with this lovely church which is affiliated to the main Anglican Cathedral just up the road.

There is plenty of open space to picnic on (great during the summer) without crowding too close to the church

    Chinese lanterns in
    Albert Park.

The Chinese Lantern Festival has become an annual event in Auckland. 2004 was my first experience of this festival. It was also a record year for attendance, with 70 000 people estimated to have visited the festival on its opening night this year. This proves it is popular and probably here to stay. I certainly hope to check it out again in 2005.
The festival is held on the weekend following the first full moon after the Chinese New Year. In 2004 it was on the nights of Feb 6-8; coinciding with our national holiday - Waitangi Day. The festival happens in Albert Park, just a short walk up-hill from Queen Street and right in front of the university. The whole park is adorned with fantastic lanterns which are alight until 2230. There are stalls selling all sorts of curios and food stalls along Princes Street.
Have a look at my Chinese Lantern Festival 2004 travelogue for more pics.
